The 5th U.S. Infantry was commanded by Lt. Col. Enos Cutler During the Black Hawk War.  The 5th reg. Co F was stationed at both Fort Deaborn (present day Chicago Illinois) and Fort Winnebago (present day Portage Wisconsin).
While entering the theater of operations the 5th U.S. was struck by cholera and lost twenty soldiers while enroute to Fort Deaborn. They were later under the command of Lt. Alexander Johnson who would lead the 5th U.S. as far south as Dixon's Ferry (Illinois) during the Black Hawk War.
