Cemetery Directions

Listed in Alphabetical Order

Baker's Creek Church Cemetery - Binfield, Blount Co., TN

From Madisonville, going north on Hwy 411. Continue through Loudon County into Blount County. A short distance into Blount Co., on Hwy 411, turn right onto County Rd. 336. There was a gas station on that corner. Very quickly you will take the first right. Go down a short distance and you'll see Baker's Creek Church. Turn left onto Nine Mile Rd. to pull into the parking lot.

Buried there: Near the center back of the cemetery are a few members of the Tulloch family. Most notably, Magnus Tulloch, who has a "Sons of the American Revolution" marker beside his tombstone. I believe there are a couple of Sharp's buried there too.

Bethlehem Baptist Church - Monroe Co., TN

From Hwy 68, turn north on County Rd. 800 (Bethlehem Rd.). Follow this winding road for a little while. Just as County Rd. 800 is to turn left, you'll see a church ahead. Continue straight ahead on the road that leads up to it (Bethlehem Church Rd.).

If you continue past Bethlehem Baptist Church, you will come to another road (Big Creek Rd.). Turn left onto this road and continue a short way until a cemetery appears on the left-hand side. This is Bethlehem Cemetery. There's no road up to it or parking area. You will have to park off to the side of the road as to not block traffic as best as you can.

Buried there: Roy Miller, Elsie (Stakely) Miller, Arteline J. Stakely, and Georgia A. Stakely.

Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery - Monroe Co., TN

From Hwy 68, turn north on County Rd. 800 (Bethlehem Rd.). Follow this long winding road for a few miles until about County Rd. 716 (Laurel Creek Rd.). That road will be on the right. Big Creek Baptist Church will be on the hill to the left.

Drive up into the church parking lot and continue across onto a dirt road. Follow this dirt road around until you reach the cemetery.

Buried here: John T. Stakely, Montia M. (Toomey) Stakely, Lawrence M. Stakely, Norman C. Miller, Robert P. Sharp, James R. Webb, Rhoda Saffle, Thomas L. Twomey, Edwinna (Webb) Twomey, and Larkin Webb. There may be more, but I haven't taken a look around again since gathering new research to document it.

Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren - Hawkins co., TN
    [Formerly Hickory Cove Cemetery]

From Interstate 81, go north on State Rd. 70 to Rogersville. It will be necessary to go a little east on US Hwy 11w to continue north on State Rd. 70. Turn north from US Hwy 11w onto State Rd. 70 for about four miles to Hickory Cove Rd. There is a Historical Marker about Hickory Cove at the intersection.

After turning onto Hickory Cove Rd., go about 0.5 -.075 mile on Hickory Cove Rd. There will be a small Lane to the left. The road looks as if it is going to a house, but if you look to the top of the hill you will see a small white church. That's Cedar Grove Church of the Brethren.

Buried there: Nancy (Groves)(Stakely) Maulsbee/Molsbee, William Maulsbee, and David Molsbee.

Chestua Baptist Church - Monroe Co., TN
   790 Chestua Church Rd.

From Hwy 68, go south on Hwy 411 and turn left on County Rd. 845 (Chestua Church Rd.). If you come to the Chestua Methodist Church while still on Hwy 68, then you've gone too far. Turn around and go back.

On County Rd. 845 you will quickly go on an "S" curve. Not long after that Chestua Baptist Church will come up on the right. A private cemetery is right next to it. The church cemetery is behind some trees on the next hill.

Buried here: Dr. Abraham (Abram) Stakely, Mary (Horner) Stakely, F.L. Stakely, Nellie (Coltharp) Stakely, John O. Stakely, Joe M. Stakely, Robert T. Toomey, and Laura (Patterson) Toomey.

Concord Baptist Church - Forsyth Co., GA

You want to get to Silver City, GA. Using the Atlanta area as the starting point, head north from the Atlanta-by-pass on US 19. Continue north past Cumming until you're almost to the Forsyth - Dawson Co. border. Go west on Silver City Road (The county map has 177 on it. Don't know if that's a county road number).

As you continue west on this road, you will approach an intersection were the road merges with State Rd. 9. Follow this until State road 9 begins to turn north into Dawson County. Instead of going north, take the left fork continuing west. You should now be on Banister Road and Concord Baptist church, with its large cemetery, and it should be on your immediate left.

Buried there: A lot of Banister's. Powell Banister and Elizabeth (Dooly) Banister (Western side of cem., located center-left). James Banister and Mary (?) Banister (Western side of cem., located center-right).

Hickory Grove Church Cemetery - Monroe Co., TN
   Hickory Grove Rd.

South on Hwy 68 to County Rd. 855 (Happy Hollow Rd.). There is a small sign for the Church of God at New Bethel at the entrance to the road. As you go down this road you'll pass the church mentioned on the sign.

A little past the church, on the left is County Rd. 766 (Hickory Grove Rd.). Go down this road for a little while and a little church will be on the right. This is Hickory Grove Church, with the cemetery across the street.

It seemed like a third of the stones could be read, a third couldn't be read and another third were the old stone slivers that are common in many old cemeteries.

Buried here: Artie Delcina Stakely, Faye Stakely, King Cash Stakely, Andrew Johnson Stakely, Laura Etta (Cash) Stakely, John Chrisly Stakely, and Jane (Morrow) Stakely.

* No marked stones were found for these people, but separate newspaper articles mention burials here, including the following from the Monroe Co., TN paper, "Democrat" written by Georgia A. Stakely about Andrew J. Stakely:

" His body sleeps at old Hickory Grove, with the bodies of his first wife, three little children: Artie, King and Faye, his father, mother, one sister, two brothers and other loved ones."

12/20/00 - A Grandson of Andrew Stakely said that while Andrew didn't have a regular marker, he believed that the stone used to mark his grave did have his name carved into it. This needs to be verified.

Hopewell Springs Church - Monroe Co., TN
   1607 Povo Rd.

Going north from Madisonville on Hwy 411, take a right on Ball Park Rd. (First right after the Wal-Mart). Almost a 1/2 mile down, take the first left. This is Povo Rd. (I saw no Road or County number signs). Keep on this road for three to five miles, following the twist and turn of the road.

A cemetery will appear on the left. This is a newer section of the Hopewell Springs cemetery. If you continue, the old cemetery will be on the next hill and the church will be across the street from it. The road separating the church from the cemetery is County Rd. 455, which should be the Old Federal Hwy, which continues south through the county and is mentioned in some articles.

Buried there: Joseph Sharp, Sr., Eliza E. (Richards) Sharp, Isaac Hicks, and Mary H. (Sharp) Hicks.

Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery - Dawson Co., GA

Because this church is so close to the county line and the roads curve in and out, this was a little tricky finding because matching the two county maps wasn't always easy. Unless I find an easier route, this is the best way to get there.

Follow the directions to get to Concord Baptist Church. Once you are there, continue past a little way to Govan Rd. and turn north. You'll soon enter Dawson Co. and the road should become Kelly Bridge Rd.

You will stay on this road for a long while as it curves and winds its way west. Among other roads, you will pass White Lily Tr., Needham Rd., Kelly Bridge Ct. and Carnation Ln. About this time it becomes less residential. The road will wind a little further and eventually there will be a little church that should appear on the south side of the road, which should be Lebanon Baptist Church. The small cemetery is across the street on a little hill.

Buried there: Deverex Banister, Mary Ann (Dooley) Banister, James Dooly, Ruth Giley (Anderson) Dooly, Pate Banister, Missouri Banister. Unmarked stones are there as well.

Salem Methodist Church - Dawson Co., GA

From GA 400/US 19 go west on Dawson Forest Rd. to GA 9 about 3.9 miles. Turn left on GA 9 (south). Follow GA 9 to Silver City about 1.1 miles. At Silver City turn right (west) on A.T. Moore Rd (Between the plant nursery and Soirée). A.T. Moore will intersect with Kelly Bridge Rd. Follow Kelly Bridge Rd. to Salem Church Rd. about 2.6 miles from GA 9. Turn right (north) on Salem Church Rd., which will turn into a dirt road. Follow Salem Church Rd. to Salem UMC.

Buried there: Possibly some Dooly's and Banister's. Not far from Concord Baptist Church.

Ward Family Cemetery - Hawkins Co., TN

From Interstate 81, go north on State Rd. 70 to Rogersville. It will be necessary to go a little east on US Hwy 11w to continue on State Rd. 70. Turn north from US Hwy 11w onto State Rd. 70. Drive for about four miles to Hickory Cove Rd. There is a Historical Marker at the intersection about Hickory Cove.

After turning onto Hickory Cove Rd., make the first left and go down this road for a while. A little cemetery will appear on the left-hand side next to a residence. This little family cemetery is divided into two sections. Modern and old. Most, if not all, of the old section uses the stone slivers for markers.

Buried there: According to cemetery records in the Hawkins County Gen. Library located in Rogersville, Martin Myers is buried here, though there is no headstone with his name on it. His wife may be there as well. There are several unmarked stone slivers.
