Generation No. 4 4. VENANTIUS S.4 GILLIS (JOHN P.3, DONALD2, ANGUS1) was born May 18, 1835 in Miscouche, PE, Canada, and died Dec 13, 1915. He married CATHERINE ANGELINA M'LELLAN Feb 24, 1868, daughter of AUGUSTINE M'LELLAN and ANN M'INTYRE. Notes for VENANTIUS S. GILLIS: Venantius attended Central Academy (later Prince of Wales College) at Charlottetown and upon the completion of his studies there and the suc-cessful passing of his examinations in 1860, he entered upon his career as a surveyor, which he has continuously followed with success since that time in connection with the operation of his splendid farm, which fronts on the north side of Richland [Richmond?] Bay. The place is well improved and highly productive and is considered one of the choice and attractive homesteads in this vicinity. Mr. Venantius Gillis has done much surveying through this part of Prince Edward Island and is generally considered one of the most competent surveyors in this locality. Politically he is a Conservative and has held the official positions of fishery warden (1883) and commissioner for the payment of small debts on the eve of the appointment of county court judges. Religiously the family are members of the Catholic church. At Venantius S. Gillis' baptism his witnesses were John MacNeill and Catherine Gillis. Venantius lived in Indian River, St David's, Twp 18(1871) and at Howlan Road, Lot 5(1889). Venantius settled in and was buried in Indian River, PE, Canada. D., who occupies a deservedly high position among the med-ical fraternity of Prince county, was born at Indian River, Prince Edward Island, on October 8, 1875, and is a son of Venantius S. and Catherine (McClellan) Gillis, the former a native of Miscouche and the latter of Indian River, the father being a surveyor and farmer during his still active years. The paternal grandfather, John Gillis, who was a native of Scotland, moved to Prince Edward Island a number of years ago and here occupied a respected position in the community. Edward Gillis received a good. district school education and then attended St. Dunstan's College at Charlottetown four years, graduating in 1895. Having determined upon the medical profession as his life work. he then entered the medical department of McGill University at Montreal, where he graduated in 1.899, with degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery, after which he returned to Kensington, where he has since been engaged in the active practice of the healing art. He possesses a comprehensive knowledge of his profession and has kept closely in touch with the latest advances in the healing art, being a liberal reader and deep thinker and has been successful to a gratifying degree in his practice. He is a gentleman of many fine personal qualities and enjoys the sincere regard of all those with whom he has come in contact. Fraternally he is a member of the Independent Or-der of Foresters and the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association, and in religion is affil-iated with the Roman Catholic church. On October 18, 1897, he married Miss Annie Bella Fraser, a daughter of Daniel and Mary (Donohue) Fraser, both of whom are also natives of Prince Edward Island. Archibald Finley MacLellan Gillis was second child in order of birth in father's family, educated in public schools, and until 1879 lived on old homestead, assisting his father. In 1879 he added to this property by purchase and is now (1906) owner of some 250 acres, successfully farming. A practical man he gives personal attention to every detail of work and is considered a leading farmer and reliable & progressive citizen as well. Since 1890 A F Gillis has served capably as postmaster at Miscouche, and has taken an active part in public affairs. He is Roman Catholic, and his influence is lent to every movement which promises to benefit the community in which he resides.
