GeneaSource Photos FAQ

Why do we charge for GeneaSource photos?
At GeneaSource we spend hundreds of hours every year scouring estate sales, flea markets, antique shops and garage sales for old photographs with identification on them. While we love what we do and love to connect photographs to their descendents we also incur expenses in our acquistion of the photographs and in their preservation. In regards to the photos that are donated we truly believe that our small fee for storing, maintaining, advertising and distributing the scans is well worth the historical importance of having a photo of an ancestor. We try to keep our prices at a bare minimum.

Why don't we display the photos online?
In the past we did display the photographs online but we ran into two significant problems. The storage space for such a large quantity of photographs was more than we could sustain given our low prices and we also found that the photographs were being stolen from the site. We are more than happy to give detailed information about each photograph to any interested parties, including hair color, age, clothing, etc. We regretted having to take the photographs down but found we had no other choice while still being able to keep the site available.

Why would someone donate their photographs?
People who donate photographs to GeneaSource tell us that they just want to make their photos available worldwide to as many people as possible. Often they donate their photos to many other sites as well.
