McKinney, William, private, Virginia line, also Georgia line born before 1758.  Enlisted, 1775 in Charlotte County, Virginia where he then lived.  Pension began 3-4-1831; certificate issued 2-2-1833

William McKinney enlisted from Charlotte County, VA. In 1775, under Capt. Thomas Collier,  he was marched to Petersburg, Va and then joined the Mechlenburg and Halifax Troops.  They were then marched to Jamestown, then to Williamsburg and York, then to Gwimm's Island, and were stationed there until the battle was over.  He marched then to Cherry Point until the battle was over.  He marched there under Gen. Lewis, then returned home and went to Georgia, where he enlisted under Capt. Austin for three months.  Later he enlisted under Capt. Williamson, Capt. Logan and Lieut. Charles Herd, a continental officer.  Gen Howe wanted Gen. Williamson to give up the flour and bacon to his officers and us to draw beef and rice in theirstead, and the soldiers refused Gen. Howe and his officers got mad and went off and left the army at St. Mary's river.  Marching to Trout's creek, a distance of 25 miles, and a scrimmage, and Clark, the commander was wounded and they had to retreat to St. Mary's river.  Gen Williamson then sent Maj. Pickens, afterwards Gen. Pickens, back to Trout Creek, he (McKinney) in the company.  In the spring following he was at Augusta under Gen. Williamson when the British took Augusta, at the time of Oakes defeat at Bryar Creek.  A few months later he went to Augusta and was taken prisoner by the British and held for four months.  He was in the battle of King's Mountain and in that battle he was engaged all the time, and assisted in defeating Gen. Ferguson, and took a great many prisoners.  He was under the command of Campbell and Shelby at King's Mountain.
