The following pages contain writings by my great-great-grandfather, Captain Samuel Carter Stout. If you have read the Civil War section, then you know he served in the Union Army, Company E, 9th Kentucky Infantry, 1st Batallion. He was a Lieutenant here, and was promoted to Captain of the Militia in Barren County by Governor J. E. Brambest, because apparently recruiting Union Soldiers in a Confederate county was tough business at the time.
Grandpa Stout was a very prominent man in the community, and was held in high esteem by all, just as his forefathers were in the communities where they lived. His brother Daniel was also given this quality.
Grandpa was apparently a really big writer, and contributed many editorials to the Glasgow Republican, recognized as the Union newspaper at that time. He was not only a very intelligent man, but seemed to have an incredible forsight of the times to come, as you will see in the succeeding articles.
I have also included letters written to his daughters, which will give you a more personal view of what was not only a loving, but great man. |
