so i'll admit it, i'm a sucker for reading dick grayson in the batman beyond world. this story, however, is fresh the concept is ingenious, with a nine year old dick grayson showing up in the new gotham. the story is split between solving the mystery and the family reunion. the interactions between dick and bruce are only second to those between bruce and terry. oh, and babs, and ace... the dialogue in this story is so realistic, blending perfectly with the various cartoons, and the background details show that the author is as much a fan of comics as well. it's tone was so quiet yet heavy that it gripped my heartstrings.

bittersweet is the only word i can think to describe this piece. it's wonderful in its subtly and superb in its simpleness. barbara is retrospective about dick, but the flashbacks aren't jarring like some stories. instead, like a fine piece of music, it flows from one time to another, and all the while amanda shows us an accurate glimpse of the female mindset. it's a beautiful one shot with astonishing depth. the epitome of bittersweet romance long gone away and the frightening prospect of moving on.
