A client came to me with a peculiar problem. He and his wife had purchased
a section of land at Taupo, on the central volcanic plateau of New Zealand's
North Island, and fortuitously, where I visit regularly to pursue my passion
for troutfishing. They wished to build a
holiday home, 2 bedrooms, a study etc. The problem - the previous owner
had already started to build a house, a rectangular concrete pad had been
completed, 6m x 10m, with the drainage already completed, but they wanted
a dome.
Question ..... Could I design a dome which took advatage of the work
already completed, which was worth about $12,000 NZD.
The plans and elevations below show how the problem was solved - using
a modified 4v superellipsoid. The buiding permit will be through soon and
we hope to erect this dome during the next summer - January/February 2001
in the southern hemisphere.
Concrete pad 10m x 6m (33ft x 20ft) with drainage pipes already completed.
The solution, a rectangular floor plan to fit, thus obeying my philosophy
of draping a dome over what the client wants.
