After seventeen years, the Western Red Cedar shingles on the Wilson
Dome at Pukekohe, near Auckland, New Zealand, were starting to look a bit
sorry. The main cause for concern was the staples used originally to fix
the shingles. In exposed areas of the roof they had corroded and were not
holding the shingles on as they should. This has convinced me that only
hot-dipped galvanised clouts should be used to attach shingles. Those areas
where the shingles were nailed were fine.
However, Gary and Maureen Wilson, with their retirements drawing nearer,
decided that they wanted to get the dome right now, while they were still
earning, rather than facing re-shingling in another ten years time, when
they would be on a limited income. They chose Certainteed CT20 Shingles
in a mid-grey colour.
BEFORE:
It was sad to strip the cedar shingles - they were beautiful, weathered,
rustic, "shaggy" - my taste. But don't those asphalt shingles look good!!!!
It was imensely satisfying to spend time at their dome and see how
they had lived in it, raised their two children, and appreciate how much
they loved it.
