For those of you who don't know, mIRC is an IRC client. See the internet innards section for some info on IRC.

A list of popular IRC servers

Basic IRCing

IRC only takes a few minutes to learn, fortounitely. Not many things in life do.

Setting it up

If you run Windoze, you need an IRC client. I highly reccommend mIRC. It's available at www.mirc.com.

Once you've downloaded mIRC, you need to install it. Run the file that you downloaded, it will guide you through the setup process.

The mIRC setup program will set you up with standard setup options, so don't tinker with them yet. When you start mIRC(make sure you're connected to the net first), a connections options will pop up. Select a server, I use StarLink. Then fill in what username you want and what username you want should your first choice not be available. For real name, I reccommend you put only your first name, as everyone can see this. Then enter your email address, or a fake one if you want.

Using it

Hit connect. You will be connected to the server, if it is up. A list of comman channels will pop up. Close it. then, in the status window, type '/list'(Without the quotes). It will bring up a list of the available channels. Choose one. You'll be connected to that particular channel.

The people could be quite talkitive, or it could be silent. If it is silent, and there's only one person there, chances are that it's a bot(a comptuer program), so you should choose another channel. Otherwise, start talking. Be polite, and the other people should be polite back. If they aren't, I'd try another channel.

There are a few commands you should know. Whenever you want to issue a command to mIRC, type '/' and then your command. It won't appear in the text box. One of these commands is '/me'. '/me [text]' will put out * [text]. So, if your nick was Garabaldy, and you typed '/me hiccups', it would print out, "* Garabaldy hiccups", in purple. This is called an action command.

Should you want to send a private message to the user, '/msg [user] [text]' is the format.

Well, that's the basics.

mIRC Scripts

mIRC Scripts remind me of C a little. Here are my scripts.
My mIRC Scripts & such
These are some of my sciripts & most of my aliases & popups. The scripts include a autogreet(can react differently to preset nicks should you care to), ping responders, quote-o-matics, etc...
