Woolley colliery school opened in 1877 and closed in 1993, on a recent visit to Wakefield archives I looked at the school log books and transcribed the following, which relate to my grandfather and his brothers.

Page 165 April 17-1891
At the first fortnightly exam which I have given today,the following children have gained less than 6 marks out of 12.Friend Garforth.(5)
Page 178 June 2-1892
Examined standards 3 today,reading fluent but lacks expression,writing good with the exception of Friend Garforth.
Page 180 June 27-1892
The arithmatic in standards 3 is fairly well done, but the papers of George Garforth & Friend Garforth show a little carelessness in the simple process addition and subtraction.

Dictation was very satisfactory on the whole, but the following will need attention, Friend Garforth.
