Quakes Jolt Taiwan

TAIPEI -- Two earthquakes jolted southern and
central Taiwan early on Monday but there were no
immediate reports of casualties or damage,
                          seismologists said.

The first quake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale,
struck at 12.18 am (1618 GMT on Sunday), with the
epicenter 12 km south-east of Kaohsiung city.

The second tremor with a magnitude of 4.8 hit at 7.47
am (2347 GMT on Sunday) with its epicenter 18.6
km south of Taichung and 7.7 km underground.

Minor tremors and aftershocks have been a daily
occurrence in Taiwan since a devastating quake last
September which left 2,400 people dead, 11,000
injured and more than 100,000 homeless. -- AFP
