JAKARTA -- The death toll from a powerful
earthquake which caused extensive damage in eastern
Sulawesi -- flattening 237 government buildings and
destroying more than 13,000 houses -- grew to 35
yesterday, an army spokesman said.
The 6.5-magnitude quake struck before noon last
Thursday and damaged thousands of homes and
buildings along a broad stretch of eastern Sulawesi
and the offshore islands of Peleng and Banggai.
Sergeant Sarifudin Arifat, a spokesman for the
military base in Luwuk, a town on Sulawesi island's
eastern coast, said more bodies were being
uncovered as rescuers dug through the ruins of
buildings and homes.
At least 148 people were injured, with 43 in a serious
condition, he said.
Rescue officials expect the death toll to climb further
as they reach more isolated areas.
Sgt Arifat said rescuers and army soldiers were
providing food for the survivors and erecting tents for
those who could not return to their damaged houses.
He said four Indonesian navy warships had been sent
to the area to help with rescue efforts.
Huge waves triggered by the earthquake swept
through some villages in the islands, sending houses
sliding into the sea. -- AP
