COMMON MISTAKES / WRONG CONCEPTS

  1. How to answer comparison question?

e.g. compare and contrast the vegetation of TRF & TD.

Students must compare each vegetation component (e.g. height, diversity, biomass) of TRF & TD separately. NEVER describe the vegetation of TRF first & than TD. Then, it is description, not comparison.

  1. How to describe climatic graph?
  2. NEVER describe the climatic graph base on months, i.e. the temperature of January is ¡K the rainfall of January is ¡K. Instead, students should have a clear structure of how to describe temperature (temperature range, highest and lowest temperature, distribution) and rainfall (total and distribution)

  3. Use definite wordings

NEVER use indefinite wordings like ¡§if¡¨, ¡§may¡¨ and ¡§would¡¨.
e.g. If Hong Kong is wet in summer, flooding may take place. (Wrong!)
Hong Kong is definite wet in summer. Flooding always takes place after heavy rainfall in Hong Kong.
