When a length of wire is wound around a good magnetic conductor such as a piece of soft iron and current is passed through the wire, the soft iron becomes a magnet so long as the electric current is flowing through the winding wire. Fig 2

When the power is turned off, the magnetic field disappears. Fig 2b

This field effect is known as electro magnetism

All Magnets created by using electromagnetic induction are called electro-magnets.

  • The soft iron with the wire wound around it is called the core.
  • The current carrying conductor is called the winding.
