3.2 Telecommuting - 3.2b Brief History

3.2b Brief History

An important approach to telecommuting was started by Rank Xerox. In 1980, Xerox encouraged his managerial staff to leave the office and create a network of small companies that supply "Xerox" with the same services that they had carried out as employees. These workers were "telecommuters" or "teleworkers", who were able to do their jobs equally well from home or from the office. This important move released an office building and saved Rank Xerox the £330 000 a year it cost to run. The teleworkers found that some of them missed the social side of being in touch with one another. Teleworkers are generally more productive than when they are in an office, and they can increase the their standard of living as well as d o other kinds of work.
