3.3c Computer Fraud

The use of computer communications to transfer cash and information over long distances (namely via the "Internet"), has opened many opportunities for criminals. An early example of computer fraud is that of a bank employee in America some year s ago. They discovered that the bank "rounded down" interest payments involving fractions of a cent. He modified the program that did this job to transfer all these "lost" fractions to his own account. Over a period of time, and wit h the bank having thousands of customers, the employee took advantage of this "loop hole" until he was found out!

In order to reduce computer fraud, it is essential to train the police force in the use and abuse of the computer. It will also be necessary to establish international co-operation since computer hacking can be done in one country to affect another compu ter somewhere in the rest of the world.
