3.1c Skill Shortages

While many workers are now finding that their skills are no longer needed, there is now the problem of a shortage of skill in computers. It can be stated that the main problem of computers is that the technology is moving so fas t that it is expensive and very costly to keep the systems up-to-date. In recent years, employers have started to look for members of the younger generation with the skill in computers. This attitude is somewhat unfair to the older generation - so the option of training should be taken. This is quite expensive for the employer. With increasing demand for staff with computer skills, and a reduction in the number of young people available for training, the employer must think of ways in which to attra ct skilled workers. This can lead onto incentives, such as higher pay, more comfortable conditions and flexible hours. However, these workers will have different working preferences. Needs may vary from person to person. For example, the worker may pr efer to work in the comfort of their own home rather than travel to the office. (Please see 3.2 for section on Telecommuting).
People with young children might be attracted to a job where a nursery was provided, or where the hours were arranged to fit into the school day. It is these situations where the employer must analyse and question about in the interviews.
