Motorola - The Microprocessor: The Apple's CPU

The Apple's CPU

The Apple Macintosh uses the family of Motorola CPUs (Central Processing Unit): The 680x0 range.

The Apple LCIII uses a 25MHz 68030 processor and other Macs come with 68040s operating at various speeds
Due to an improved design, a 25Mhz 60840 is about twice as fast as an 68020.

Newer developments are in PowerPC technology. Working in co-operation with Apple and IBM, Motorola has produced the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) chip. This is what is in the PowerMacs today.

The company are developing the PowerPC for Apple as well as IBM.
