The Black CatNext PoemSlumbering by the fire the dark shape is curled,
With two green moons shining from the black,
The ears lay perplexed waiting for any sound,
Gently twitching at the noises from around.
I raise my hand to stroke the arching back;
The velvet fur is undulate beneath my palm,
A rippling shadow that melts into the night,
Leaving only two moons that stay in full sight.
Eight white talons peer from silken paws
As the graceful body stretches into life,
The elegant head sweeps against my arm
And he purrs contently with warmth and charm.       © 14/10/97
