Togaibh Fonn
... means Sing Out in Gaelic, and our program invites you to do just that.
A three day learning experience held at Iona, the course offers the
opportunity to learn Gaelic songs, and to learn about the language and
culture of Gaels in Nova Scotia.
Each day's session will include learning of the language elements of the
songs, a workshop on a specific group of Gaelic songs, and the learning of
the songs themselves, both songs that were composed locally and those that
were brought over from Scotland.
You will hear a variety of traditional songs and singers (live and on
tape) and participate in small group learning sessions led by Gaelic song
specialist, Rosemary McCormack. You'll have an opportunity to
perform songs, and to make contact with the traditional Gaelic singers of
Cape Breton.
Access will be provided to an extensive library and sound archive of
Gaelic materials. Visits will also be arranged to meet Gaelic singers and
enthusiasts in other communities.
Instructor Rosemary McCormack is a native Gaelic speaker and was raised
in the Outer Hebrides, surrounded by Gaelic songs, from puirt-a-neul to
Ossianic ballads. She has spent 25 years in Cape Breton, collecting songs
and conducting research on the Gaelic tradition here. She is well-known as
a Gaelic performer, broadcaster and teacher.
Registration for the session is $120+GST(Can) or $90(Am). Fee includes
all tuition, materials, snacks, a light lunch each day, refreshments for
the Sunday gathering and the concluding barbeque and ceilidh on Wednesday.
Pre-registration is advised as space is limited.
