Though I speak no Dutch, Jacqueline van der Waals (1868-1922) is a poet whom I would like to add to my life. Some of her titles need minimal translation: "Alpenbloemen", "Julinacht", "Meimorgen", "Zomerdag", "Acaciabosje" and a sonnet, "De oorlog (war) in Zuid-Africa."
I would like to read her in translation but can next to nothing. My own attempts at translating on-line, even with a dictionary at hand, must mostly miss the mark yet I think there is something to be gained by guessing what the poet is trying to impart. Here follows one of her beautiful poems and with it, my translation:
