About project

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:

WHY?

During ages The Roman Empire was one of the most successful ones. Official language, Latin, was transmitted to many nations. During the middle age was Latin the only international language spoken all around Europe. Even today many terms exist only in Latin (or is used national version of Latin word - like e.g. cellula, ae, f = cell (Engl.) die Zelle (german), cellule (span.)). You can not also live without Latin while studying history, philosophy, juristic, medicine and many natural sciences.

I am interested in Latin and I have searched on internet for sites where is any opportunity to use Latin. There are some interesting sites where you can find much (as described on my Related sites page), or you can even meet people interested in Latin who really want to use it, but what I really did not fount was any place where you can use your Latin knowledge and relax on the same time. I hope SITUS AMICORUM LINGUAE LATINAE - FOLIA LAUREA (web site for friends of Latin - the origin of the name is described elsewhere) will be able to do something like that.

WHAT?

I would be glad if Folia laurea became a site with treasure of Latin texts for various topics - for example jokes, poems, songs or just ANYTHING.- and also discussion platform.

THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME "Folia Laurea"

It is very difficult to explain or even to translate this linguistical joke, but I will try it. In Czech leaf=paper. Folia is plural from Latin word folium,i,n for "leaf". It is quite common (but not so correct) to call scientific periodical for example "Folia pharmacologica".

Now the second word - "laurea". Laurea comes from laureus,a,um, which mean in Latin "triumphal", but also "made from laurel" or "made from bay".

So "Folia Laurea" can mean either "triumphal periodical" or "bay-leaves". :-o

HOW MUCH IS IT?

Folia laurea and all services connected with it are free.

HOW CAN I BECAME A CONTRIBUTOR ?

Send me your document (in Latin only) to my e-mail address gera_keller@yahoo.com in HTML format with the citation of the source if it is not original text. I am interested above all in original texts and notices to interesting Latin sites and publications. If would be nice if your document supported help by JavaScript - DEMONSTRATION. It would be nice if this "technology" became cardware. For the beggining e-mail would be O.K.. Feel free to ask for explanation "how does it work" or how to build a site around my engine. Technical support for editing in Ms-DOS and Windows 3.1 - 98 for "registrated" users is also availible.

I claim for some limitation of content rising from demands of owners of this server .

WHY DON'T YOU CORRECT THAT REALLY SILLY MISSTAKE ?

I hope this question is not so frequenly asked :-). But feel free to send your recommendations for improving this site and please send details of any mistake which you may find here.
