Subject: Still relaxing in Dahab
Okay, it's Saturday afternoon, and we've been relaxing poolside, and I'm contemplating going snorkelling today, but the sea is kind of rough. There's been a steady wind coming off of the Gulf of Aqaba. Right across the sea you can see the shores of Saudi Arabia, with it's high mountains, and you feel as if you could reach there with a good swim (but checked the map, it's pretty far away).
Last night as we sat (or layed down) for dinner outside, camels and horses cross the beach, and it's kind of weird. You're staring out into the dark sea, having dinner and a camel crosses your line of vision. There are also tons of dogs and cats who feel no way about sitting next to you. Last night, I threw some meat for a cat, and it landed on my favourite dog's nose. The dog jumped up, and the cat took a wicked swipe at it's nose, and the dog started whipping around the restaurant after the cat. Not like me to cause any commotion like that!
I'm here for a couple of more days, but after the whirlwind tour of Upper Egypt, it's been kind of hard to just sit back and relax and save a couple more thoughts to electronics. I'm waiting to do most of my shopping in Cairo as my packs are pretty full, and I don't want to lug this stuff on the bus all the way back to Cairo. Lorra, may take some of my dirty laundry back to Cairo when she leaves tomorrow, so that I can fit more stuff in my pack. I'm staying an extra night to do the midnight climb up Mt Sinai.
I've brought some lighter fluid and a megaphone. My plan is to set fire to a bush, and freak some tourists out by speaking ominously into the megaphone--"This is GOD..." Okay, maybe I won't but I think that would be pretty funny.
Went to a disco last night, and it was fun. Music is about 3 to 5 years old, and it was great to hear some "oldies." I couldn't get down to some of that Arabic stuff though. Lots of Rastafarians here too (original Ethiopian kind, not Jamaican) and that was interesting to see. The locals have much more varying looks here as they are from all over Africa. One guy we met looked Filipino, so now I understand why I'm sometimes passing for a local, when I'm wearing a hat. (I have more hats than shirts on this trip, I think? But most of you know of my hat fetish. I'm also surviving on only two pairs of Fila's--it's been rough, but I'll get through it. Did break down and buy some Sandals, guess what brand?)
Tonight, we're having dinner at the Shark Club, which I have heard about from travellers on my journeys. It's supposed to be a great place for a cheap meal, but with ton's of good food. Very cheap to dine here, with a gourmet type meal costing about LE25.00($10cdn). Beer ranges from LE6-LE12 for the local Stella. That's comparable to My Apt prices for a bigger bottle of beer.
Anyways, I'm going shopping, and then I'm going back to the pool, and do absolutely nothing.
Oh yeah...GO RAPTORS!!!
