Rangers
were established 124 years ago in 1873 for the
love of football. They have played at the present
Ibrox site since 1899. Before that, they played
at numerous places including Glasgow Green,
Burnbank, Kinning park, and what is now the
grounds of Edmiston house.
Rangers have won 47 league
championships, 27 Scottish Cups and 21 league
cups in their history. They have also won the
european cup winner's cup in 1972, and were
runners up in 1961 and 1967. They missed out on
playing in the 1993 Champions league final by one
goal. (in those days, entrance to the final was
through two leagues of 4).
Rangers largest attendance was
118,567, against Celtic in 1939. Rangers and
Celtic are renowned throughout the world for
their rivalry. The "old firm" rivalry
goes back to 1888, when Celtic were set up to
help the poor Irish Catholics of Glasgow. Sadly,
many old firm games in the past have been marred
by violence between the fans, but thankfully,
this is a rare occurence nowadays.
