long time since a post, i know. in my defense, i have been posting photos pretty much constantly. here. go. go now.

well i've just now finished moving out of my old place, where i was for far too long. three whole years after moving to la i am finally upgrading. i haven't lived in a place that long since i lived with my parents in campbell. and then i wasn't moving EVERYTHING, just select items. three years is a long time to collect junk all in one place. a lot of it is gone now, and the dumpster at the old place is very full. i also made three separate trips to goodwill. (yes, a LOT of stuff)

i was sick for christmas, but it was manageable. spent a few hours at each of our holiday shindigs before i got tired and had to head home. of course finishing up my moving when i've juuust gotten over a nasty cold doesn't help, and now i'm half sick again.

i've been cutting full time for a while now, mostly on friday night lights, but there are a couple other projects on the burner. let us all pray for a swift end to these strikes, they're already putting a lot of people out of work, and if they don't ease up, i may be one of them. one of the perks of being at the end of the post production chain is that we should be the last ones hit by this thing, in theory at least.

well i need to do some work and then i need some REST. i am TIRED. moving and sick at the same time, hacking and wheezing and the like, is neither enjoyable nor good for you. well, happy new years all.

i wrote this on one of my insomniatic sprees earlier this week, but i felt the need to post it before the book came out. WARNING: possible spoilers for anyone who isn't up to date on books 1-6 and movies 1-5.

PREDICTIONS ON HPDH

first of all, harry & co. will destroy all the horcruxes and voldemort will be defeated. just cuz i'm sure that's how JKR rolls. as to the method, since similar things have happened in the past, it's possible that harry could possess voldy and then fill his mind with all his friends and loved ones, causing LV to either be destroyed outright or to flee his body (if that's possible), assuming that his horcruxes, (he thinks) still in place, would allow him to return again. given that's been overdone even within the matrix trilogy though, i find it unlikely. again unlikely is the possibility that harry will have to sacrifice himself in the end, but it would be a killer (pun intended) plot turn.

i find it likely that there will have to be a sacrifice of some sort, and that it will have to be not an adult but one of the kids; the most powerful sacrifice would be from one of the three closest to him, ron, hermione, or ginny. it would really suck to lose one of harry's peers, particularly the above three (since ron and hermione are meant to be together, and since ginny and harry are meant to be together). the loss of ron or ginny would probably mess up harry's relationship with the weasley clan, even if it's just because harry feels guilty. i am pretty sure that if harry does survive, he's "meant to be one and whole for many years"*, and ruining the relationship with his only real family would just be cruel. an unusually hopeful sign would be to spare the entire weasley family, though they have a whole lot of people in peril and in prominent positions in the story. an unfortunate parallel would be for both wormtail (likely) and remus (semi-likely) to die and put the marauders all in one place. incidentally, i believe wormtail still owes a lifedebt to harry which could wind up playing a role in the final battle.

harry needs to cry. a lot and probably all at once. the poor kid needs some catharsis, maybe at his parents' graves. please, please, JKR, tell the boys reading your books that it's okay to cry sometimes, to grieve, and that it doesn't by definition weaken their masculinity.

one thing that has struck me during the last two or so books, and does even moreso now that i've seen the movie for OOTP, is that ginny has a huuuge role to play in the last book. she is effin badass, and JKR has been building her role in the series carefully and consistently. she is absolutely a great match for harry; she is a strong personality, independent, high-profile, charismatic, and a _very_ powerful witch... also she's not unlike harry's mother. (let's not get all oedipal on this point, harry never really knew his mom, but if subconsciously he had a vision of what a loving woman was like from the first year or however long he had, it would make some sense. also, let it not escape us that hermione has certain similarities to mrs. weasley) back to ginny. one spot that stands out for me is in HBP where JKR paints that her "red hair flying like flames in front of him... locked in combat." and in the last movie, the kids are repeatedly shocked at ginny's abilities. they're such that they're almost out of her control. she is, afer all, the seventh daughter, and the first weasley girl in generations. another point of interest for ginny - she makes a nice literary counterpoint to the most powerful witch on voldy's side, bellatrix.** she is similarly charismatic and full of style and flair. hermione is awesome, but she doesn't have the same power and fearlessness/boldness that ginny has. i must say, i've been really enjoying the strong female characters that JKR's been writing - ginny, hermione, luna, cho to a lesser extent - and i will miss them.

i haven't done too much conjecturing as to what the horcruxes might be, but i think it's possible that voldemort used harry's mother or father in the making of the last one, and that harry'll get some of the info he needs when he visits his old home.

i won't talk about the usual and extremely likely predictions buzzing around, such as RAB being regulus black, and dumbledore's brother aberforth stepping up (who they showed in this last movie!) other than to mention them for those who haven't heard them.

* yes, i quoted the lord of the rings in a predictions post about harry potter. i have no misconceptions about being a nerd. (incidentally, that quote is frodo talking to sam like three pages from the end of rotk)

** this wasn't originally my idea, but i really like it. since the leak, i'm not visiting any even remotely harry potter pages til i've read it all, so i'll find you my reference later.

a post! what is the world coming to??!?!?!1??!

where have i been? how have i been? i've been around, and i've been pretty damn good to tell the truth. plenty of stuff going on, hence the radio silence (well also just not being super into posting).

well, let's see, since the last time i posted i finally got in the union, which is royally sweet, financially not being the last thing i'd mention. we held onto friday night lights for the whole first season, and it's back for a second in the fall. watch the show people, and tell your friends. it's on thin ice as it is, and the current schedule has us airing on (you guessed it) friday nights. our intern calls it a 'tivo slot.' we've just finished up 'the kingdom,' and i'll tell you, the combination of both those shows going at the same time was NOT a walk in the park. i won't get into details here, ask me offline if you'd like to know, but it was both a good learning experience and a situation that no one should have to be in. another kicker was a pilot that we did, for which i did pretty much all the dialog editing, shot some adr, and ran the dialog end at the stage. it was a hell of a week, but it was one of those things that completely drains you, yet leaves you feeling triumphant. then we moved the shop (sound dogs), and for some reason, leaving that building didn't really affect me emotionally as i'd expected. it did for most of the other sound dogs folks, but not me. it was a nice place, but it's just a place, and the place we moved to is a nice place too.

well, after that whole chunk of heavy, i hopped in my car solo and got the hell out of dodge. drove up to sj, saw some old friends i hadn't seen in a while and the fam. headed up to san francisco for a couple days, where i wore out my feet good and proper and spent some time with stina. then i drove down the coast, staying on pch pretty much the whole way. it's absolutely gorgeous, and a really really long drive just south of carmel. i wanted to do the 17-mile drive, but i didn't have time. next trip. also next trip i plan to hit big sur. i stopped and spent a little time in santa cruz (where i need to do all my clothes shopping -- awesome stuff), scotts valley, carmel-by-the-sea (the town with no addresses), and found myself down in santa barbara. my aunt lives there so i got to spend some time with her and her boyfriend, and let me take this opportunity to plug her new venture, DeeVa Day Spa! i got the royal treatment, and let me tell you, it's good. also in santa barbara i finally got to meet dijanna and aldo's newest family member, little nicolas. he's such a flirt, and he has the most adorable smile. i wish i'd taken some pictures, but that was apparently the only time during my trip that my camera wasn't glued to my wrist. then i headed back home. the trip was really refreshing, and just what i needed after the last few months.

since then i've started as first assistant on a show at sony called 'walk hard.' it's my first non-independent show away from sound dogs, and it's shaping up well so far. it's kinda nice to be on the lot, a neat atmosphere, and there are considerably more people around than i'm used to. eh, so i've gotta sit an hour in traffic to get there, so big deal, i like my car. the whole experience is very empowering and fulfilling, so i'm willing to spend some time getting there.

i've been doing a bunch of origami lately, mostly kusudama, and i want to get more into tessellations. there are a couple pictures on my flickr, and i'll post more when i've done more that i'm willing to show. =) other contenders for my free time lately: thesis, honing my editing chops, live music, yoga, and pondering ocean kayaking (gotta buff up the arm muscles before that tho).

otherwise i'm doing really well. i'm feeling healthy and happy and free. i'm in a good place.

go see my pictures!

oh yeah! not that i've forgotten, i've just been rather busy... NEW CAR! i got a scion xa on monday. black sand pearl - which is this shimmery black. super-badass sound system w/ipod hookups and controls on the steering wheel, alarm system was installed today (i live in la, it's pretty much required). it is so cute, and it maneuvers like a hot knife through butter. small outside, big inside. it's awesome and i love it. expect ever more pictures on flickr (you can click on my photo blog link to the left there, or click on one of the pictures in the little moving photo thingy) because i like taking pictures and i like my new car, so... yeah. dad flew down tonight to pick up the acura, which should ease the strain on the parking lot at work. (it's been said that i have a "fleet" of cars there... my dad's acura that i've been driving, my old volvo, my new car, occasionally jeff's car when he comes to visit) we're so extremely busy at work. i'm expecting not so much as a free weekend day for several weeks. (hello overtime) and while i did want to get my car before all the chaos began, i don't think i'll get to do too much travelling with it right away which is a bummer. i'll try to write more about my new pretty at a later date, and also about the fun stuff at work, but for right now, i need some pillow time. gnight all.

starbucks reviews:

it's a hot hot day here in the valley, and someone left the ac off last night so we're boiling upstairs. darren did a starbucks run today and we all went the frappucino route. you realize they have 30 kinds of frappucinos now? thirty. practically baskin robbins, but more expensive and bigger franchiseage. so thoughts on these. caramel has always been a favorite, but exceptionally sweet, just loaded with sugar and fat (given they all are, but this one can be overly saccharine). mocha is decent, the green tea one is so-so, but it doesn't have a whole lot of flavor. today i got an espresso one, which is pretty good, hits the spot, and doesn't have much fakeness. tastes like espresso ice cream, but without a lot of creamy. apparently the banana one is supposed to be eh/okay, but darren sacrificed his taste buds today on the banana mocha frappucino. vile, apparently. like the melted end of a banana split that has been sitting around for three hours, with random chunks of banana. so go ahead and take this as a recommendation for anything else.

i've been thinking lately that i haven't had anything to blog about. but i was wrong. i don't like just posting boringness, i only post stuff if i feel interesting enough. and this is definitely interesting.

i've been working rather long hours (hello overtime!), like last night when i was there til 9:30. this is how i spend my friday nights. at work. i'm so cool. in any case i would've been there much later if we didn't have an excellent intern to check the adr tapes for me, and to yell at telemarketers in german. we all gather around when we pass the call off to our "marketing department". see, german is the best language for yelling, and it's totally worth the hassle of being interrupted by telemarketing calls when we can get a good laugh out of it.

in any case, tommy (our german intern) and i needed to record some things for a movie we're working on called beerfest. we bought a 24 pack of pabst genuine draft and spent 30-45 minutes piercing full cans, splattering beer about, and pouring beer over a three foot drop. i think the mic smells like beer now. we sure did, since we were covered with beer by the end. we actually got the entire downstairs at work smelling like crappy beer and the recording booth now smells like a bar on sunday morning. it was horrible, disgusting, and completely random. and ze german, coming from a nation of beer connoisseurs, called it disgusting and offensive when he could stop laughing. the task then was to drive home without being pulled over. imagine trying to explain that to a cop.

it's days like these that i love my job.
said barb 6/3/06 10:03 AM

i am apparently pretty distracted lately. last night, fairly sick and after a long day at work, i went to the store, and afterward spent two full minutes trying to get into my car. i first tried the drivers side door, then the passengers side, and finally the trunk to unload my heavy groceries, at which point i realized i was trying to get into a honda. i drive an acura. it was the next car over.

i went to a friend's wedding shower last week. for some reason, it was gambling themed. we all got fake money, which we traded in for chips (because it would be silly just to hand us a bunch of chips, apparently). i played roulette for a little while and was doing rather well, much to the chagrin of the guy across from me who kept losing his fake money. in the end, fun was had by all, and once again, congrats to meg and andrew.

so the hostess of the party had these rather elaborate favors made for the occasion. it's a small chocolate design featuring a gambling theme and cards that spell out the date of the wedding. looks like the mold was handcrafted, and well. pretty impressive, really.

enter the pet peeve.

when it comes to favors from showers and weddings and the like, they're typically meant (in my mind, at least) to be kept to remind the person of the event or couple or whatnot. problem is, i generally try to steer clear of little doodads, they clutter up my place, and i have way too much help at that already. and especially when they're nice, cute, or particularly appropriate, i have problems getting rid of them. that's part one of the problem.

it's my general opinion that food is for eating, as candles are for burning. i don't typically keep food because it looks pretty. sushi is prepared with great detail to presentation, which is supposed to accent the enjoyment of eating it. but you eat it. that's the whole idea of FOOD. a chocolate that is designed with such detail that it makes me feel bad eating it is just cruel. the same holds true for candles that are shaped to represent the statue of david or the statue of liberty or just cool shapes with paint and beads and such on the outside. you try to burn the statue of david, you'll just wind up with a statue without a head, and so on down, which just looks plain wrong. i don't particularly need a wax statue sitting around my place. i love candles, but i love them because i love to burn them. it's a tease to give me a candle i can't burn. so please people, for all that is good and holy, and in the desire to maintain my sanity, if you ever feel like giving me a candle, don't tease me. give me a CANDLE.

let's join together against this ridiculous industry of wax puppy dog sculptures with a little wick coming out of his brain. vive la revolution!

okay, the natives are getting restless.

we've been uberbusy at work the last couple weeks (i'm not offering this as an excuse for not blogging in so long, i'm just stating the facts). we're working on a tv pilot based on a movie we did (fnl, for those of you keeping track). it's pretty damn good, and very much like the movie. if it gets on the air, you should watch it. at least that's my opinion of it at the current incarnation. it's supposed to get a lot of changes before we get to the final mix at the end of this coming week.

a couple weeks back, darren, the dialog editor dislocated his shoulder playing hockey. it was the final seconds of the game and even managed to score a goal to tie the game, the crazy canuck, tho they lost in ot... i heard the story a lot. his arm was (and is still) in a sling, so he couldn't really cut. so instead of calling someone else in to cut it, i was called in to sit in front of the computer and be his hands. this kind of a scenario has possibility for lots of strain and "no, not that way... too far... your other right!", but darren is a very chill individual. it actually worked out very well, and i got some mad experience. the typical way people learn to edit is to sit behind another editor who's working and just look over their shoulder, and getting commentary if you're lucky. i spent several days sitting in front of an editor actually doing the work and being given direction. less direction as we went along too. hell of an experience.

jeff is here bugging me to blog and also bugging me to stop blogging and help decide what to do tonight. thinkin about a movie. and we're both thinking about being healthier, so maybe we can get some tasty healthy food. or make some tasty healthy food.

my neighbor will is moving out. i've never really talked to him much, but he's very nice, and he's super quiet. i might not have noticed it before, the contrast today is a throng of big noisy guys helping him move, and it's hella noisy. (yes, i said hella, i'm from norcal, i can't help it) so what does the future bring? i could have some nice new neighbors, but i think it'd be hard to be quite as quiet as will. i may soon live beneath a herd of antelope and next to kegger central. more news as it unfolds.

yesterday morning i lost my key in my car. not my keys, and not locked in my car. the one key for operating the car fell off sometime after i'd unlocked the car and while i was getting in. you know how you drop a pencil and it winds up bouncing somewhere across the room and under a water cooler? it took me 45 minutes to find the key, and i'm convinced that it was stuck in the seat somewhere and only fell out when i started shaking the car, because i'd checked there before. where'd i find it? behind the driver's seat, under the floormat. under the floormat, people. i was not particularly pleased about the whole thing.

in other, less recent, news, i'm going to be getting a new car. well a "new" car. right now i'm driving my dad's acura, until we can find me something else. we all love the old volvo, but her time has just about come. i will definitely put up pics here when i'm gettin my new vee-hickle, til then you'll have to be just as patient as i am.

i've been thinking lately that i could use a new (i.e. real) bedside table. what i have now is a piece of wood resting on two boxes. i suppose i've been somewhat hesitant about it because i'm picky, and probably also because i have a specific picture in my head of what i'd like. and i'd want to make it myself.

one of the things i'd really like to do someday is woodworking. i'd like to have a garage with a workbench and a scroll saw and a bunch of wood and all the tools to make general mischief of this sort. i'm especially digging on the seventh thru ninth ones here. i'd do furniture, pictures, whatever else comes to mind. there's a picture at my parents' house of a sunset done with different kinds of inlaid wood, and it always fascinated me growing up. i also had a great ol time working out at my dad's workbench. i could just imagine this being the kind of art/craftwork i'd enjoy doing in my free time. ah, dreams of future fun.

try not to ask why i was looking for anything remotely near this, because it was a long time ago and i'm a little fuzzy on the topic. (around thanksgiving perhaps?) but, well, here. in case it disappears when someone gobbles up this great domain name, i'll sum up here. the page is called turkeylovers.com (admittedly one of those that is just pointing people to other categories), but the related categories? turkey dating, jewish singles, and turkish relationships gone wrong.

on a more humorous note, one of my coworkers and i got food poisoning after grabbing some subway last thursday. i didn't get it as bad as he did, but my stomach has been killing me all weekend, and this might just keep me from my monday morning long-course swim. so... don't eat at subway. at least the one on sepulveda and victory in van nuys.

fortunately for me, jeff was up visiting this weekend. so i had a good time. that goober can always make me laugh. thanks bbby.

i love my job. went out recording two different days this week with shaughnessy. tuesday we went to the desert to record hitting beer cans with golf clubs, but it was hard to find a good spot without traffic or planes overhead or birds or whatnot. we made a wise decision to take shaughnessy's jeep and not the "abductor van" since we did a little off-roading. wound out on a bunch of dirt roads in the middle of nowhere (still not quiet tho, dammit), and we found a spot with a bunch of old junk. broken down, burned up cars, giant construction equipment parts, a torn up chain link fence, and an abandoned trailer. we just couldn't help it, we threw a golf ball through the window... great sound, some nice debris... then we bolted. =)

yesterday we got ourselves a golf cart at the universal lot and drove around recording the hell out of the thing. before lunch i hung off the back holding the mic toward the ground and the wheels until i was properly covered in dirt. after lunch shaughnessy worked the recorder and i got to gun the cart for bys on pavement, bumpy-ass dirt roads, and, well, i found a way onto a patch of blocked-off grass toward the back of the lot that we tore up pretty good. hence the muddy tires on the carts that are supposed to stay on pavement. ooh, and i squealed the tires and spun it out a bit. hehehe... it was fun.

altogether, about 9 hours out exposed to the elements, running around, causing general mischief and having a ton of fun at it. i'm totally wiped out this weekend. muahaha...

i am going to finish my thesis, dammit. i am going to, i am going to, i am going to, i am going to finish it. i will defeat the persistent auditory interface and i will emerge victorious in the war against udp. the first step from here is to chart what DOESN'T work in my programming, since all i've had lately is failure in that department. when i get this one small detail to work, it's just a matter of tweaking (knock on wood) and then finishing the paper. i'm going to finish it. i will i will i will finish it. do i have any os x beta testers for that blessed day?
