3. Nathaniel Bowman (2.John2, 1.Robert1) born 1608, Westwood Hill, near Leak, England., married Anna "Hannah" ______, born Abt. 1610. Nathaniel died 21-Jan-1682, Cambridge farms, Middlesex, Mass. The family originated near Kirk-Oswald, Carlisle. The earliest church records of Kirk-Oswald were destroyed. He came to Watertown, Mass about 1630, his name appears on the records in 1633-37, he bought land at Cambridge Farms of Edward Goffe in 1635 and settled there in 1649, near the present Arlington line. Anna: Anna probably died first as no mention is made of her in his will dated 21 Oct. 1679 and proved 4 April 1682.

Francis Bowman (3.Nathaniel3, 2.John2, 1.Robert1) born 16-Dec-1630, of Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA, married 26-Sep-1661, Martha Sherman, born 21-Feb-1640, Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA, (daughter of John Sherman, Capt. and Martha Palmer) died 25-Feb-1728/29. Francis died 16-Dec-1687, Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA. Francis was admitted freeman in 1652. He resided at Cambridge Farms, where he died 16 Dec. 1687 aged 57 years. In the administration of the estate, 1 April 1698, mention is made of the widow, Martha, who was guardian of the two minors, Samuel and Jonatham, the sons "Frances," Nathaniel and John and John Evileth for Mary Bowman.

Samuel Angier) died 25-Jul-1754. Francis died 23-Dec-1744. By will dated 1744, he directed his wife, Ruth to take as her own proper estate forever thee of his negro servants, "Batiss, Philliss and Pompy, so named". He gave also to his granddaughter Ruth Bowman, full powe at his decease to take his negro boy Domini "to be her own forever," she to pay her brother Francis l20, old tenor, at the time of the "recieving Domini." He filled from time to time every office in the gift of the people. He was on the committe in 1693 to purchase land for the support of the ministry, on the first board of selectmen and assessors under the town organization, and frequently reelected. He represented the town in the General Court, 1720, 22, 26, 32,33, and was also one of the royal magistrates, appointed first in 1720. In seating the meeting house he was one of those "Piaft at ye tabil" and his was "was plaft in ye forefeatt in ye Bodye of feats".

Hannah: She was known as Mrs. Hannah Williams when she married Alpheus. Hannah: 1860 Troupsburg Census page 16 lists her as being age 73 born in Rhode Island. 1865 Census for Troupsburg page 9 lists her as being age 78 mother of 4 children born in Chenango Co. and married twice. 1870 Troupsburg Census page 29 lists her as age 84 born in Rhode Island.

Gardner was born at Forkston, Wyoming Co, PA May 27, 1842 & died October 8, 1922 in Westfield, Pa. She was the daughter of Alpheus & Hannah Bowman. A few years ago she had a very painful & serious accident falling, the last one near fatal. Two years ago she was in a car accident near Maple St. being badly thrown off the seat of the car injuring her back. Never after being able to walk without help. Her early days were spent at Forkston, Pa. until her mothers death. At the age of 13 she came here with her father, resided with a older sister for a time, later at the home of her cousin, the late Dr. Northrup near Woodhull, N.Y., again residing at North Fork with a sister until her marriage to Charles Gardner at the age of 17. Their children were Mrs. Nettie Pease of Wellsboro, Pa., Harvey Gardner of North Fork, Pa., Mrs. Minne Steenburg of Westfield, Pa., Mrs. Ava McLean, Walter Gardner of Westfield. Burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

When he married in 1864 one of the witnesses was Irena Clarkson, his sister. He was married by Charleston Philips. OBITUARY - "Bucktail" Regiment Member Dies at Sloan - Alpheus B. Cady was born in Brookfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, October 30, 1838, and died at his home in Sloan Monday morning, February 26, aged 72 years, three months and twenty-six days, stomach trouble. Mr. Cady enlisted in Company "A" 1st Regiment of Rifles a Pennsylvania regiment on 21 July 1861 and served four years in the Civil War. Mr. Cady and his family came west and settled in West Fork Township, this county, 1n 1866. There they resided on a farm until in January, 1887, when they moved to Sloan and have since resided. When Mr. Cady came to Woodbury county the Sioux City and Pacific railway had not been built and he cut many ties used in its construction. during the Civil War the deceased served in the renowned "Bucktail" regiment of sharpshooters. He was always distinguished at the many reunions by the wearing of his bucktail. He was at one time a member of the Sioux City G.A.R. post. He served for seven years as marshall and street commioners of the town of Sloan. Mr. Cady leaves his wife and five children to mourn his demise. The children are Harvey and Milo Cady, of Montana; James Cady, of Bronson, and Mrs James Lamb and Mrs. George Harper of Sloan. The funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. J.B. Stuart conducting the services, Interment was made in the Sloan Cemetery.

Clarkson, widow of David Clarkson, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.J. Sawyer, in Troupsburg township, N.Y., Sunday night, February 18, 1923. She had been in poor health for a some time and had not been able to walk for over three years, but she bore her affliction with patience. A week before she died she had tonsilitis, but was better so she sat up some, but was taken worse Saturday night and died Sunday night. Irena E. Clarkson was born on the Lower North Fork May 14, 1844, and was the fourth of a family of six children of Elanson and Sarah Bowman Cady. All are dead except a half-brother, Will D. Mallory, of Sunderlinville. She was married to David Clarkson April 20, 1867. They went to housekeeping in Squab Hollow and lived there for a time, from there going west and in 1870 they bought the place where she died, moved there and built a one-room shanty, cleared up the land. Six children wer born to them, Halcey, who died in infancy; Harry W., who lives in Huntley, Ill.; Sarah B., wife of Fred Briggs, deceased ; Lonsa M., wife of Charles Weldon, deceased; Lena M., wife of Jesse Sawyer, who lives on the old homestead, and Ina D., wife of John Fortner, of Painted Post, NY. Mrs. Clarkson was not much of a hand to go, always preferring to remain at home, and was truly a home loving person. Funeral services were conducted at the house Wednesday afternoon of last week by Rev. Harold H. Charlesworth, pastor of the Austinburg M.E. Church, and interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, at Austinburg. David: David Clarkson was born in the town of Ovid, Seneca County, New York, April 15, 1843 and is the oldest of seven children born to Abraham and Matilda Clarkson. David enlisted August 17, 1861 in Co. K, 86th New York Volunteers. His Enlistment Papers state that David was born in Ovid, New York and stood 5 ft. 11-1/2 inches in height. He was of light complexion, with blue eyes and brown hair. He listed his occupation at that time as farmer. He enrolled for three years and served as a member of the Late Capt. John Phinneys' Company K. He fought in the Battles of Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Beverly's Ford and Gettysburg. During this time he was taken sick, but remained until September when he was honorably discharged on the front in Petersburg, Va. by reason of "Expiration of Term of Service" on September 14, 1864. In that same year, 1864, he bought a farm in Squab Hollow and lived in a log house near the corner of Squab Hollow Road and Brookfield Road. In 1867 he married Irene Esther Cady, daughter of Alanson and Sarah (Bowman) Cady, of Brookfield, Pa., by whom he had six children. In 1869 he sold his farm on Squab Hollow and went West but shortly returned to the Jordon Settlement (Parallel) and bought a farm consisting of about 50 acres on July 18, 1883. (Book 180, Page 132) In April of 1885 he bought an additional 28 acres and paid $650. for it. (Book 180, Page 215) He made a specialty of hay and sheep. He lived in a log house, and built a new house on the new road. He was a church going man and attended the Methodist Church in Austinburg, Pa. He was Constable for three or four years and was a member of S.A. Baily Post No. 351, G.A.R. of Troupsburg. His obituary reads: DAVID CLARKSON DIES SUDDENLY--This town was surprised and saddened Monday morning when the call came to funeral director H.B. Jones to come and take charge of the body of David Clarkson. Mr. Clarkson had not been enjoying the best of health for some time but was around and came to town as usual, and was in Knoxville last Friday, consequently his family and many friends did not consider his condition serious. Monday morning, November 25, 1912, he was around as usual and about 9 o'clock he walked toward the stove for some purpose, falling to the floor and when picked up he gasped only a time or two and was dead. Mr. Clarkson resided on his farm just over the state line in Troupsburg, a short distance from Austinburg. He was one of the substantial and reliable men of his community, strictly honest and honorable and despised anything that was not strictly to the letter in his dealings. He was a good neighbor, husband and father. He was a member of Troups Creek Grange of Austinburg, a soldier of the Civil War and a pensioner, a member of S.A. Baley Post of Troupsburg, and one of the most regular attendants at all the meetings of the Post, he was a church going man and a supporter of the church. He was 69 years old. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Harry Clarkson, now in the West; three daughters, Sarah, wife of Fred Briggs, of Painted Post, New York; Lena, wife of Jesse Sawyer of Chenango County, New York and Ina, wife of John Fortner, who resides on the Clarkson farm in Troupsburg. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon of this week at 2 o'clock in the Methodist Church at Austinburg, Rev. M.R. Chapman, pastor of the church, will officiate, and the interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Austinburg.

Mr. Sawyer was the son of Joseph and Emma Rowley Sawyer, born in Troupsburg Township, March 7, 1883. After local schooling, he married Lena Clarkson of Woodhull, November 25, 1909. The couple farmed the Clarkson place on the Austinburg-Woodhull Road for nearly 40 years, until Mrs. Sawyer died in 1948. He moved to Windsor in 1949 and remarried. His second wife, Maude Phelps, survives. He was a member of the Austinburg Grange.

He met Ruth when he and a friend were going to the movies in June 1934. One day they went for a ride and stopped in Troupsburg, NY and bought a marriage license. Then they drove over to Woodhull, NY where they were married. They were hesitant about telling their parents they were married so Jiggs took Ruth home and they spent their wedding night apart in their separate homes. They told their parents the next day and Jiggs took Ruth home with him the next night and they lived with Jiggs parents for a few months before they rented a house down the road a mile or so. Both Ruth & Jiggs worked for the Trowbridge Saw Mill in Sabinsville for a time after they married. They bought a house on Squab Hollow Road in Troupsburg, N.Y. on May 27, 1937 for the sum of $700.00. As it did not have any indoor plumbing, Jiggs built an addition on the back of the house that included a bedroom, a bathroom and a large back porch. His father, Jesse Sawyer helped with the construction of the addition. A new well was also drilled because before this Ruth had to carry water from the Ralph Eddy farm, which was up the road about a quarter mile. In January 1965 Jiggs and Ruth moved uptown to Troupsburg and Jiggs remodeled the whole house or practically all of it. He gutted the whole second floor and half of the first floor. Lawrence Thomas, a carpenter, helped Jiggs rebuild the stairway to the second floor and down to the cellar, but Jiggs did most of rest of the work himself. He then proceeded to build two large bedrooms along with a hallway, stairway room on the second floor and enlarged the livingroom to about double its previous size. They lived in this house for 53 years and most of their children were born there. Jiggs worked for the Elkland Tannery for almost 40 years before the Tannery closed. Jiggs became ill with lung cancer and had an operation where they removed most of one of his lungs and part of the other. He died of Lung cancer in May 1975. Jiggs enjoyed woodworking, and he had a coin and a stamp collection. Jiggs stood 5'10" tall and weighted about 220 lbs.. While working at the Tannery he was a night watchman, chauffeur, grounds keeper and stockroom worker. Ruth: RUTH graduated from the Sabinsville School (11th grade) in June 1930; She then graduated from the Westfield High School in June 1931, and then attended and graduated from the Meekers (Elmira) Business Institute in June 1932. After graduation she could not find a business job so she went to work for the Eclipes plant in Elmira until 1933 when she became ill and her mother asked her to return home to Westfield, PA. She met and married Jiggs the next year. Ruth raised a large family and worked outside the home at the same time. She was elected Troupsburg Tax Collector and served in that capacity for over 20 years. She was also the telephone operator for a few years. She lost that job when the new dial phone system was installed about 1965.

In 1950 he went to work for the Corning Glass Works. In August of 1963 he and his wife moved to Lindley, New York and now make their residence at 10152 Tannery Creek Rd, Lindley. Anna: was born October 18, 1921 in Woodhull, N.Y. to the parents of Floyd Morehouse and Clarice Decelia Jordan. Her education comprised attending grades 1 - 3 at the Woodhull School Dist #13, grades 4 - 8 in Knoxville, Pa., grade 9 in Woodhull, N.Y., and 10 - 12 grade in Knoxville graduating from Knoxville in 1939. She attends the Austinburg Baptist Church along with the East Lindley Baptist Church. She states that during her leisure hours she enjoys sewing, reading, gardening and teaching SS.
