Philip died 5-Aug-1830, Ovid, Seneca Co., New York, Buried: McNeil Cemetery, Ovid, Seneca Co., NY. At the time of the baptisms of his first three children it was noted that Philip was unbaptised. Apparently before the birth of their 4th child, Philip and his family moved from Somerset County, N.J. up to Seneca County, in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. After the death of Sarah at 32 years, 8 mos., 21 days Philip married Jane Sebring. Her family had also moved from Somerset County up to Seneca County. From the inventory made of his goods, chattle and credits after his death it appears that Philip was a carpenter. His most valuable possession being a set of joiners tools worth $30.00. No record could be found of him owning property in Seneca County and he died intestate at the age of 48 years, 3 mos., 5 days.

Her will on file at the Surrogate's office, Waterloo, NY (Pkg. 3544), states the following. "Sebring Clarkson only brother of deceased who is a minor, left neither father or mother, brother or sister surviving except above. she was unmarried, and left no descendants." It is interesting to note that there was no mention of her four half brothers.

David died 20-Aug-1880, Northville, Wayne Co., MI, Buried: Cady Street Cemetery, Northville, MI. David was baptized in the 1st Reformed Church of Somerville, N.J. He had one son, Levinus H. Clarkson as evidenced by a query in the Somerset County Historical Quarterly, Vol I, page 158. When David was 13 years old his father died. In the Spring of the following year, 1831, David left his five siblings and step-mother and journeyed to Michigan with Capt. William Dunlap and party. William and Sarah Dunlap having adopted David took him along to raise and as an additional laborer to help clear the wilderness. They traveled across New York State to Buffalo on the Erie Canal aboard the canal boat "Sharls" and across Lake Erie on the steam boat "New York" arriving at Detroit, a town then of about 2,000 inhabitants, May 18th 1831. William Dunlap settled on 160 acres where the town of Northville was yet to be built. In the decades to come, David labored at many jobs such as clearing land and building cabins and later houses, hauling goods by ox-team to and from Detroit, grinding grain at he local grist mill and farming. For the remainder of his life he resided in the community he helped to build and as a member of the State Pioneer Society would later write several historical sketches for the "Northville Record" telling of those early days in Northville and the Pioneers who settled there. On the 3rd of January 1844 David was married to Sarah Ann Bradley (the daughter of Northville Pioneers Harvey Stone Bradley and Maria Rose). David and Sarah had seven children, all born in Northbille. David died at Northville August 20th, 1880 and was buried at the Cady Street Cemetery. His wife sarah later moved to Independence, Kansas to live with her daughter Emma. Sarah died at Independence October 22, 1903 and was brought home to Northville and buried beside her husband.Children:

i John Abbott Clarkson born 1846, died 1-Dec-1865, Civil War, Chattanooga, Tennesse. John died at the age of 19 of Dysentery. It was the close of the Civil War through which he had fought. He died in Chattanooga, Tennesee. John never married.

5. Peter Phineas Clarkson (1.Philip

Robinson, born 12-Sep-1826, Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., NY, (daughter of John Robinson and Keziah ______) died 17-Jan-1871, Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., NY. Peter died 5-Mar-1907, Depew, Erie Co., New York, Buried: Lancaster, Erie Co., NY. Peter was the 4th child of Philip and Sarah Powelson Clarkson. He was just 18 mths old when his mother died and not quite 8 years old when his father died. Two months after his 20th birthday his step-mother, Jane Sebring, died. He was probably born in Seneca Co. NY as there is no record of him being baptized at the 1st Reformed Church in Somerville, NJ as were his brothers. Peter and Mary were married in the town of Varick by the Reverend Father Willis. They lived in Seneca Falls, New York were Peter workd as a boatsman, probably on the Erie and Seneca Canals and as a farmer. Peter joined the New York Infantry Volunteers, 50th Regiment Company K as a private on November 6, 1861 at Seneca Falls, NY. Peter was mustered in at Elmira, NY on December 17, 1861. By the end of December his regiment was in Virginia fighting. In May 1862 Peter was listed on the Company Muster Roll as "left sick in Yorktown." In July and August 1862 he is listed as private 2nd class. In August his Regiment's name was changed to 50th Regiment, NY Engineers. During November and December he was sick in the regimental hospital at Aquia Creek, VA. On January 4, 1863 Peter was discharged for disability by order of General Burnside at Aquia Creek, VA. His Certificate says his condition was "Broken constitution - has been gradually failing for 3 months. Now has chronic Anasarca of the extremitus due,I think,to extreme dibility. (Anasarca is a medical term for Dropsy). On his Declaration for Original Invalid Penson his disabilities are listed as " Spring, 1862, was taken with Chronic Diarrhea, disease of the kidneys and deafness caused by explosions and having to work in the water." Peter reenlisted on December 28, 1863 at Junius, NY, probably to receive the bonus being offered by the government, as a private of Co. H, 148th Regiment, NY Volunteers. He was mustered out of Co. G, 199th Regiment, NY Volunteers on August 28, 1865. Peter's physical description was listed as being 5'9" tall, fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes. He was the flag carrier next to the drummer a part of the time he was in the service. A shorter man was always chosen to carry the flag so that he would not get shot down. It was also said that Peter was strong willed and stubborn. Peter returned to Seneca Falls to live after the war. However, his mailing address was listed as 12 South Street, New York City when he applied for a pension for the disability he suffered during the war on April 10, 1882. He was granted this pension and received his final check of $20.00 on February 4, 1907. Peter died at the age of 85 years, 8 months, 17 days on March 5, 1907. Mary: It is said that Mary was part Seneca Indian. She died at the age of 44 years, 4 months, 5 days.Children:

ii Mary "Mamie" Adelphia Clarkson born 25-Apr-1853, married Abt 1870, John Maguire, born Abt. 1852. Mary died 28-Oct-1900. Mary and John had no children. Mary was always referred to as "Mamie". Marietta "Mary" Noles lived with them for about a year in 1871 before her marriage to Mamie's brother, Edward. John and Mamie owned two houses in New York City on 47th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues (the 3rd and 4th houses from 3rd Ave. on the right side). They were bought with money from John Maguire's parents estate. Mamie died in one of these houses in August 1915, aged 64 years. After her death John sold the houses and moved to Long Island where he remarried. His will left everything to his second wife with the stipulation that upon her death everything would go to the Day Star Lodge of the Eastern Star.

Folkerd apparently used Sebring as his given name. He and Abigail lived in Steuben Co, NY for awhile then they moved to an unknown place. The Walmsley family was from Monouth Co, NJ and moved to Lodi, Seneca Co., NY before 1830.Children:

ii Harry W. Clarkson born 20-May-1871, Parallel Rd., Trouspburg, NY, Occupation: Farmer, died Aft 1905. Harry W. Clarkson went West when he was a young man and made a claim of 160 acres. When he came home for a visit he was injured in the woods resulting in the amputation of his right arm. He later removed to Huntly, Illinois in 1891. He Never married.

8. Thaddeus Monroe Clarkson (2.Abraham

(Flohr) Mullen, born 19-Apr-1859, Greenwood, Steuben Co., New York, (daughter of John Mullen and Catherine McCarragher) died 13-Nov-1937. Thaddeus died 6-Jul-1932, Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York. Thaddeus served in the same regiment as his brother, David during the Civil War; Company K, 86th Regiment, NY Volunteers. He fell sick after 90 days service and returned home and married Mary Brown. They adopted William Montgomery. After the death of Mary,Thaddeus married Sarah Flohr. Thaddeus and his brother Edgar ran a store in Canisteo, N.Y. but later dissolved the partnership and Thaddeus took up farming. According to his marriage record to Sarah Mullen in 1895, he is listed as a merchant. Sarah: This marriage record is located in the Canisteo Town Hall. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. L. Box and the certificate of marriage was registered in September of 1895. It lists her residence as Canisteo, N.Y..Children by Mary Brown:

Francis died 9-Dec-1925, Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. Francis died in Rochester State Hospital after being there since December 1st. She had become ill Thanksgiving day of that year.

9. Edgar Clarkson (2.Abraham
2, 1.Philip1) born 23-May-1849, Yates County, New York, Occupation: Grocery Merchant, married 1873, in Jasper, Steuben Co., New York, Eunice I. Armstrong, born Abt. 1853. Edgar died Abt. 1930, Washington State. Edgar Clarkson was agent for the Howe Sewing Machine Company. In 1873 he married Eunice Armstrong of Jasper, Steuben County, New York, who is one of the descendants of the Murphy family which is widely known in that part of the country. In the spring of 1874 he went into the grocery business in Jasper, New York and on July 21, 1893 he lost both building and stock. The loss was estimated at $3,000 over the coverage of the insurance. On February 21, 1894, he bought the Real Estate business of C.C. Aber in Canisteo and established a similar business in partnership with his brother, Thaddeus. The business was established under the name of "Clarkson Brothers." Edgar Clarkson was a member of the Troupsburg Lodge of Masons #649, but after the partnership was dissolved between Edgar and Thaddeus, Edgar moved to Niagara Falls, New York. He also went into the grocery business in Chippawa, Ontario, but again moved, this time to Washington State where he died.Children:

George and Laura L. Plank) died 3-May-1923, Buried: Plank Cemetery, Westfield Twp, PA. Roxy died 21-Apr-1939, Osceola, Tioga Co., PA, Buried: Plank Cemetery, Westfield Twp, PA. Her parents died and left her an orphan. She was 8 when her father died and 12 when her mother died. She lived with Harvey and Raney Plank until she married Ray Leroy George and began housekeeping in Sylvester, near Westfield, Pa. and later in Woodhull, NY and finally in Osceola, Pa. Her funeral was from her daughter, Clara Holts' home and the Westfield Baptist Church, Tioga Co, PA. Her tombstone reads "Anna R. George, Wife of Ray". The Clarkson Family Bible says Roxy Anna Clarkson was born April 24, 1858.Children:

16. Edward Marcellus Clarkson (5.Peter
2, 1.Philip1) born 27-Dec-1851, Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., NY, Occupation: Canal Barge Operator, married 1-Apr-1872, in New York City, New York, Marietta Noles, born 24-Apr-1852, Tyre, New York., (daughter of John Noles and Laura Ryan) Occupation: Candy Store Operator, died 11-Apr-1936. Edward died 25-May-1913, Coney Island Hospital, New York. Shortly after their marriage Edward and Mary went to live on the Erie Canal where Edward was in the barge business. Edward's younger sister, Laura Amelia, lived with them on the barge. At that time the Erie Canal was 70' wide at the surface, 52' wide at the bottom and 7' deep. It could carry vessels of 240 tons with a draft of 6'. Their first two children, Ida Keziah and George Wallace, were born on the Canal. About 1880, they moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. and Edward engaged in New York Harbor and Erie Canal Shipping. He was a partner in the firm of William E. Cleary, 17 South Street, N.Y.C.. Edward was elected a Member of the Assembly in 1895 (118th session) representing the 6th Assembly District of Kings County. Edward became a member of the Assembly mainly to protect his business interests such as obtaining money appropriations to keep the canal dredged and to further the interests of incorporating the Erie Canal into the larger New York State Barge Canal. Both Edward and Mary were active in the Masons and Eastern Star after they moved to Brooklyn. Edward was initiated into Nassau Lodge #536 on March 11,1880. He was passed March 25 and raised April 28,1880. On August 1, 1889 he left Nassau Lodge and became a charter member of Minerva Lodge #792. Mary E. Clarkson joined Evangeline Charter #51 in the Brooklyn District on July 8, 1884. She later became a charter member of Day Star Chapter #81 on June 21,1891, becoming a Life Member of that Chapter on April 7, 1908. She served as Worthy Matron of Day Star Chapter in 1897. For awhile the family was quite well-to-do, the older children going to private schools and having tutors, but through some unfortunate circumstances (perhaps alcoholism) Edward lost his partnership in the Cleary firm and by 1899, before the birth of their last child, Edward and Mary were no longer living together. The Eastern Star helped Mary establish a small candy store business to support the family. Mary died at the age of 83 years, 11 months, 18 days. Marietta: She is also known by the name of Mary Coleman, which leads one to believe that she went by the name of Mary and may have been married to someone by the name of Coleman. She has been both a housewife and a candy store operator.Children:

iii Edward P. Clarkson born 30-Mar-1885, Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, died Abt. 1937, Veteran's Hospital, Bronx, New York. Edward was born after the family had moved to Brooklyn from the Erie Canal. He was a member of the 14th Regiment and served in the Army in the Mexican border war with Pancho Villa. During World War I he was an instructor in rifles and small arms. After the war he was a typewriter repairman for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. He remained a bachelor and lived with his mother in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn.

He met Ruth when he and a friend were going to the movies in June 1934. One day they went for a ride and stopped in Troupsburg, NY and bought a marriage license. Then they drove over to Woodhull, NY where they were married. They were hesitant about telling their parents they were married so Jiggs took Ruth home and they spent their wedding night apart in their separate homes. They told their parents the next day and Jiggs took Ruth home with him the next night and they lived with Jiggs parents for a few months before they rented a house down the road a mile or so. Both Ruth & Jiggs worked for the Trowbridge Saw Mill in Sabinsville for a time after they married. They bought a house on Squab Hollow Road in Troupsburg, N.Y. on May 27, 1937 for the sum of $700.00. As it did not have any indoor plumbing, Jiggs built an addition on the back of the house that included a bedroom, a bathroom and a large back porch. His father, Jesse Sawyer helped with the construction of the addition. A new well was also drilled because before this Ruth had to carry water from the Ralph Eddy farm, which was up the road about a quarter mile. In January 1965 Jiggs and Ruth moved uptown to Troupsburg and Jiggs remodeled the whole house or practically all of it. He gutted the whole second floor and half of the first floor. Lawrence Thomas, a carpenter, helped Jiggs rebuild the stairway to the second floor and down to the cellar, but Jiggs did most of rest of the work himself. He then proceeded to build two large bedrooms along with a hallway, stairway room on the second floor and enlarged the livingroom to about double its previous size. They lived in this house for 53 years and most of their children were born there. Jiggs worked for the Elkland Tannery for almost 40 years before the Tannery closed. Jiggs became ill with lung cancer and had an operation where they removed most of one of his lungs and part of the other. He died of Lung cancer in May 1975. Jiggs enjoyed woodworking, and he had a coin and a stamp collection. Jiggs stood 5'10" tall and weighted about 220 lbs.. While working at the Tannery he was a night watchman, chauffeur, grounds keeper and stockroom worker. Ruth: RUTH graduated from the Sabinsville School (11th grade) in June 1930; She then graduated from the Westfield High School in June 1931, and then attended and graduated from the Meekers (Elmira) Business Institute in June 1932. After graduation she could not find a business job so she went to work for the Eclipes plant in Elmira until 1933 when she became ill and her mother asked her to return home to Westfield, PA. She met and married Jiggs the next year. Ruth raised a large family and worked outside the home at the same time. She was elected Troupsburg Tax Collector and served in that capacity for over 20 years. She was also the telephone operator for a few years. She lost that job when the new dial phone system was installed about 1965.

In March 1943 he and his wife purchased a farm in Cook Hollow in Troupsburg Township. In July, 1943 he quit Ingersoll-Rand and went to work farming. In 1950 he went to work for the Corning Glass Works. In August of 1963 he and his wife moved to Lindley, New York and now make their residence at 10152 Tannery Creek Rd, Lindley. Anna: was born October 18, 1921 in Woodhull, N.Y. to the parents of Floyd Morehouse and Clarice Decelia Jordan. Her education comprised attending grades 1 - 3 at the Woodhull School Dist #13, grades 4 - 8 in Knoxville, Pa., grade 9 in Woodhull, N.Y., and 10 - 12 grade in Knoxville graduating from Knoxville in 1939. She attends the Austinburg Baptist Church along with the East Lindley Baptist Church. She states that during her leisure hours she enjoys sewing, reading, gardening and teaching SS.

George died 4-Jul-1934, Kings County Hospital, New York. George Wallace Clarkson was born while the family lived on the Erie Canal on a barge. When he was about 4 the family moved to Brooklyn, NY. As a boy he attended private schools and had tutors. At the time of his marriage in 1899, he was employed as office manager and accountant with Cleary Brothers firm. One barge owned by that firm was named the "G.W. CLARKSON." George met Catherine Elizabeth McDonnell through her father Martin who was a tugboat Captain at the same time that George was involved in the barge business with Cleary. When his father, Edward, was separated from the Cleary firm, George also lost his job. He went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad Barge Canal Division. When the railroad closed down the barge division, he went to work for Armand Schmall Co. on Park Row, NYC as their traffic manager. They were importers of Russian calf skins and were put out of business by World War I. George then went to work for the North American Diamond Dye Co, New Rochelle, NY which was German owned so they were closed down by the US government. George worked as a street car conductor and in construction until finally going to work for the Brooklyn Edison Co. where he was working when he died. The family lived in various locations in Brooklyn, NY: 11th St. between 3rd and 4th Ave., 4th Ave. and 12th St., 12th St. between 5th and 6th Ave., 150 Nelson St. and 5th St and 6th Ave. George died at age 58 years, 6 months, 18 days of Tuberculosis in the Kings County Hospital. He was buried from his daughter Dorothy's home. He was buried in the same grave as his wife. Catherine: Catherine died in her home at 404 5th St. and was buried in lot 14946 Bethel Slope.Children:

Norbert died Nov 1975, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Norbert & Grace Ranger were sweethearts during grammer school. He attended high school for only one year. He had always liked horses and in his teens he joined the National Guard in Brooklyn, 101st. Cavalry. Grace went on to college and they drifted apart. Norbert married his first wife, but Grace had not married. Norbert's first marriage lasted only a short time and when he was divorced he married Grace around the year 1923. They had no children and though their love spanned many years, it did not last and they divorced in the 1940's. He married (3rd) Gertrude Miller and they moved to Chicago, where he died. His principal hobby and interest was photography. The first marriage for Norbert is not listed as the name of the spouse and date and place of marriage is unknown.

George was born at the family home at 150 Nelson Street. In 1914 the family moved to 213-11th St. and the following year to 481-4th Ave., Brooklyn, NY. He attended Public School 124 at 4th Ave. & 13th St. and after 6th grade transferred to P.S. 40 at 15th St. & 4th Ave. In 1923 he graduated from P.S. 40 and went to Brooklyn Boys Vocational High School, Johnson Ave. & Flatbush Ave. Extention. In 1925 the family moved to 309-12th St. and in June of that year George graduated from High School. During 1925 George worked as an electrician for a Mr. Schneider in Brooklyn, as a fitter's helper and passerboy at Robbins Dry Dock, Todd Shipyards, in Brooklyn and as an electrician for Owen J. Moran, New York City. In 1926 George went to work for the Reading Hardware Corp., 108 Lafayette St., NY. In 1028 the family moved to 404-5th St. and on Novembver 15, 1930 his mother died at this address of pneumonia. On June 2, 1934 George was married to Anna (Anne) Margaret Kelly at St. Anne's Church, Brentwood, Long Island. Anne's mother had a summer home in Deer Park, Long Island. One month later George's father died at Kings County Hopsital. George and Anne lived first on Nichols Road in Deer Park, the summer home of Julia Kelly. At the end of the summer they moved into the city to an apartmnent in Julia Kelly's house at 351-55th St., Brooklyn. In 1935 George worked for Wilbur Rogers, 31st St., New York and from there went to work for J.M. Kohlmeier Hardware Co., Long Island City. In November 1936 George went to work with Whitman and Barnes, Inc. at the corner of Church St. and Chambers St. New York City. In 1937 George and Anne moved to 114th St. and Linden Blvd., South Ozone Park, Long Island; in 1938 they moved to 58th St. and Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn; in 1940 to 1247 E. 7th St., Plainsville, New Jersey; Novmeber 1944 to 1120 Loraine Ave., Plainfield, NJ (the 1st house they bought); in June 1950 to 1221 Lakeview Terrace which they sold in 1966 and moved to 802 Belvidere Ave., Plainfield. In 1970 Anne & George bought an historic building in Millstone, NJ which had been in colonial days a wheelwright shop. There they established an antiques business. This was sold in 1978 when Anne and George moved to Leisure Village in Lakewood, New Jersy. George worked for Whitman and Barnes until September 1952 when he started his own business, Hudson Company. In January 1953 Donald D. Foreman, a collegue from Whitman and Barnes, joined him in business and they formed Clarkson and Foreman, Inc. merging the Hudson Company into the new Corporation. The Company is a manufacturers representatives dealing primarily in gages, precision equipment and cutting tools. Lewis died 9-Jan-1970, Arlington, Virginia. Lewis' first wife was a woman who had a business school where secretarial skills were taught. Lewis ran away with one of the young woman students. He was accused of violating the Mann Act, but his brother, George Wallace, helped him avoid prison. He had two sons with his first wife. (Noel & Albert, no information on either). His first wife died - no date available. It is probable Lewis abandoned his sons and his brother, George arranged for them to be placed in an orphanage. He went to Lima, Peru as the representative of The New York Foundation. He married the daughter of the President of Peru. When the government of Peru was overthrown he escaped over the Andes with a price on his head. His wife died on the escape route. Elisabeth is presumed to be his third wife. Lewis and Elisabeth were married in 1929 in Silver City, New Mexico. Elisabeth, a descendant of President Franklin Pierce, was born in McAllister, Oklahoma. Lewis has been a newspaperman with the Denver Post, the Roanoke Times, was the SEC, was a school teacher, and a business consultant. He and Elisabeth lived in Arlington, Virginia for the last years of his life. He died of emphysema.Children:

He joined the army during WWI. Shortly before World War II he had been on a secret mission to Chunking, China. On his way home he was taken prisoner by the Japanese in Hong Kong. He was traveling in the guise of a civilian. If the Japanese had known he was an Army Officer they would have executed him. Later, he was exchanged along with Ambassador Grew. He served, for the balance of the war, at the Pentagon in the Adjutant General's Office, Troops Branch, in charge of all military schools. His last post was in the Phillipines. After he retired he worked for C.A.R.E., in the Phillipines and for several philanthropies in Washington, D.C. His highest rank was Lietenant Colonel. He died of lung cancer.Children:

When the "Kitty Hawk" went to sea, his ashes went with it and were scattered upon the sea. He was on five different carriers during his service with the U.S. Navy but the last upon which he served was the "Kitty Hawk" just off Vietnam just before he retired.
