Abraham was born in Somerset County, New Jersy and was baptised in the First Reformed Church in Somerville by the Rev. Hardenburg. About 1821/22 the family moved to Seneca County, NY and probably lived in Ovid where several family members are buried. Abraham was bound out to learn the trade of Wagonmaker and Blacksmith. In 1854 Abraham and his family moved to Rathbone, NY and he worked at his trade and at farming. In 1862 the family moved to Troupsburg, Steuben County, New York where he died in 1866 at age 51 years, 6 mos, 18 days. His wife Matilda died at age 50 years, 6 mos, 8 days and they are both buried in the Potter Street Cemetery, an old family buring ground on the farm of Blanche (Mrs. Joseph) Cady in Troupsburg. The farm has been in the Potter and Cady families for generations. Their marriage record was located at the Steuben County Clerk's Office with their marriage location being Canisteo, New York. Matilda: Thaddeus Clarkson's marriage record, located at the Canisteo Town Hall, states that his mother's name is Matilda Tuttle and his father's name is A.B. Clarkson.

David died 20-Aug-1880, Northville, Wayne Co., MI, Buried: Cady Street Cemetery, Northville, MI. David was baptized in the 1st Reformed Church of Somerville, N.J. He had one son, Levinus H. Clarkson as evidenced by a query in the Somerset County Historical Quarterly, Vol I, page 158. When David was 13 years old his father died. In the Spring of the following year, 1831, David left his five siblings and step-mother and journeyed to Michigan with Capt. William Dunlap and party. William and Sarah Dunlap having adopted David took him along to raise and as an additional laborer to help clear the wilderness. They traveled across New York State to Buffalo on the Erie Canal aboard the canal boat "Sharls" and across Lake Erie on the steam boat "New York" arriving at Detroit, a town then of about 2,000 inhabitants, May 18th 1831. William Dunlap settled on 160 acres where the town of Northville was yet to be built. In the decades to come, David labored at many jobs such as clearing land and building cabins and later houses, hauling goods by ox-team to and from Detroit, grinding grain at he local grist mill and farming. For the remainder of his life he resided in the community he helped to build and as a member of the State Pioneer Society would later write several historical sketches for the "Northville Record" telling of those early days in Northville and the Pioneers who settled there. On the 3rd of January 1844 David was married to Sarah Ann Bradley (the daughter of Northville Pioneers Harvey Stone Bradley and Maria Rose). David and Sarah had seven children, all born in Northbille. David died at Northville August 20th, 1880 and was buried at the Cady Street Cemetery. His wife sarah later moved to Independence, Kansas to live with her daughter Emma. Sarah died at Independence October 22, 1903 and was brought home to Northville and buried beside her husband.

Peter died 5-Mar-1907, Depew, Erie Co., New York, Buried: Lancaster, Erie Co., NY. Peter was the 4th child of Philip and Sarah Powelson Clarkson. He was just 18 mths old when his mother died and not quite 8 years old when his father died. Two months after his 20th birthday his step-mother, Jane Sebring, died. He was probably born in Seneca Co. NY as there is no record of him being baptized at the 1st Reformed Church in Somerville, NJ as were his brothers. Peter and Mary were married in the town of Varick by the Reverend Father Willis. They lived in Seneca Falls, New York were Peter workd as a boatsman, probably on the Erie and Seneca Canals and as a farmer. Peter joined the New York Infantry Volunteers, 50th Regiment Company K as a private on November 6, 1861 at Seneca Falls, NY. Peter was mustered in at Elmira, NY on December 17, 1861. By the end of December his regiment was in Virginia fighting. In May 1862 Peter was listed on the Company Muster Roll as "left sick in Yorktown." In July and August 1862 he is listed as private 2nd class. In August his Regiment's name was changed to 50th Regiment, NY Engineers. During November and December he was sick in the regimental hospital at Aquia Creek, VA. On January 4, 1863 Peter was discharged for disability by order of General Burnside at Aquia Creek, VA. His Certificate says his condition was "Broken constitution - has been gradually failing for 3 months. Now has chronic Anasarca of the extremitus due,I think,to extreme dibility. (Anasarca is a medical term for Dropsy). On his Declaration for Original Invalid Penson his disabilities are listed as " Spring, 1862, was taken with Chronic Diarrhea, disease of the kidneys and deafness caused by explosions and having to work in the water." Peter reenlisted on December 28, 1863 at Junius, NY, probably to receive the bonus being offered by the government, as a private of Co. H, 148th Regiment, NY Volunteers. He was mustered out of Co. G, 199th Regiment, NY Volunteers on August 28, 1865. Peter's physical description was listed as being 5'9" tall, fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes. He was the flag carrier next to the drummer a part of the time he was in the service. A shorter man was always chosen to carry the flag so that he would not get shot down. It was also said that Peter was strong willed and stubborn. Peter returned to Seneca Falls to live after the war. However, his mailing address was listed as 12 South Street, New York City when he applied for a pension for the disability he suffered during the war on April 10, 1882. He was granted this pension and received his final check of $20.00 on February 4, 1907. Peter died at the age of 85 years, 8 months, 17 days on March 5, 1907. Mary: It is said that Mary was part Seneca Indian. She died at the age of 44 years, 4 months, 5 days.

Folkerd apparently used Sebring as his given name. He and Abigail lived in Steuben Co, NY for awhile then they moved to an unknown place. The Walmsley family was from Monouth Co, NJ and moved to Lodi, Seneca Co., NY before 1830.

David died 25-Nov-1912, Troupsburg, Steuben Co., New York, Buried: Woodlawn Cem., Austinburg, Tioga Co., PA. David Clarkson was born in the town of Ovid, Seneca County, New York, April 15, 1843 and is the oldest of seven children born to Abraham and Matilda Clarkson. David enlisted August 17, 1861 in Co. K, 86th New York Volunteers. His Enlistment Papers state that David was born in Ovid, New York and stood 5 ft. 11-1/2 inches in height. He was of light complexion, with blue eyes and brown hair. He listed his occupation at that time as farmer. He enrolled for three years and served as a member of the Late Capt. John Phinneys' Company K. He fought in the Battles of Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Beverly's Ford and Gettysburg. During this time he was taken sick, but remained until September when he was honorably discharged on the front in Petersburg, Va. by reason of "Expiration of Term of Service" on September 14, 1864. In that same year, 1864, he bought a farm in Squab Hollow and lived in a log house near the corner of Squab Hollow Road and Brookfield Road. In 1867 he married Irene Esther Cady, daughter of Alanson and Sarah (Bowman) Cady, of Brookfield, Pa., by whom he had six children. In 1869 he sold his farm on Squab Hollow and went West but shortly returned to the Jordon Settlement (Parallel) and bought a farm consisting of about 50 acres on July 18, 1883. (Book 180, Page 132) In April of 1885 he bought an additional 28 acres and paid $650. for it. (Book 180, Page 215) He made a specialty of hay and sheep. He lived in a log house, and built a new house on the new road. He was a church going man and attended the Methodist Church in Austinburg, Pa. He was Constable for three or four years and was a member of S.A. Baily Post No. 351, G.A.R. of Troupsburg. His obituary reads: DAVID CLARKSON DIES SUDDENLY--This town was surprised and saddened Monday morning when the call came to funeral director H.B. Jones to come and take charge of the body of David Clarkson. Mr. Clarkson had not been enjoying the best of health for some time but was around and came to town as usual, and was in Knoxville last Friday, consequently his family and many friends did not consider his condition serious. Monday morning, November 25, 1912, he was around as usual and about 9 o'clock he walked toward the stove for some purpose, falling to the floor and when picked up he gasped only a time or two and was dead. Mr. Clarkson resided on his farm just over the state line in Troupsburg, a short distance from Austinburg. He was one of the substantial and reliable men of his community, strictly honest and honorable and despised anything that was not strictly to the letter in his dealings. He was a good neighbor, husband and father. He was a member of Troups Creek Grange of Austinburg, a soldier of the Civil War and a pensioner, a member of S.A. Baley Post of Troupsburg, and one of the most regular attendants at all the meetings of the Post, he was a church going man and a supporter of the church. He was 69 years old. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Harry Clarkson, now in the West; three daughters, Sarah, wife of Fred Briggs, of Painted Post, New York; Lena, wife of Jesse Sawyer of Chenango County, New York and Ina, wife of John Fortner, who resides on the Clarkson farm in Troupsburg. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon of this week at 2 o'clock in the Methodist Church at Austinburg, Rev. M.R. Chapman, pastor of the church, will officiate, and the interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Austinburg. Irena: OBITUARY: Irena E. Clarkson, widow of David Clarkson, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.J. Sawyer, in Troupsburg township, N.Y., Sunday night, February 18, 1923. She had been in poor health for a some time and had not been able to walk for over three years, but she bore her affliction with patience. A week before she died she had tonsilitis, but was better so she sat up some, but was taken worse Saturday night and died Sunday night. Irena E. Clarkson was born on the Lower North Fork May 14, 1844, and was the fourth of a family of six children of Elanson and Sarah Bowman Cady. All are dead except a half-brother, Will D. Mallory, of Sunderlinville. She was married to David Clarkson April 20, 1867. They went to housekeeping in Squab Hollow and lived there for a time, from there going west and in 1870 they bought the place where she died, moved there and built a one-room shanty, cleared up the land. Six children wer born to them, Halcey, who died in infancy; Harry W., who lives in Huntley, Ill.; Sarah B., wife of Fred Briggs, deceased ; Lonsa M., wife of Charles Weldon, deceased; Lena M., wife of Jesse Sawyer, who lives on the old homestead, and Ina D., wife of John Fortner, of Painted Post, NY. Mrs. Clarkson was not much of a hand to go, always preferring to remain at home, and was truly a home loving person. Funeral services were conducted at the house Wednesday afternoon of last week by Rev. Harold H. Charlesworth, pastor of the Austinburg M.E. Church, and interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, at Austinburg.

(Flohr) Mullen, born 19-Apr-1859, Greenwood, Steuben Co., New York, (daughter of John Mullen and Catherine McCarragher) died 13-Nov-1937. Thaddeus died 6-Jul-1932, Canisteo, Steuben Co., New York. Thaddeus served in the same regiment as his brother, David during the Civil War; Company K, 86th Regiment, NY Volunteers. He fell sick after 90 days service and returned home and married Mary Brown. They adopted William Montgomery. After the death of Mary,Thaddeus married Sarah Flohr. Thaddeus and his brother Edgar ran a store in Canisteo, N.Y. but later dissolved the partnership and Thaddeus took up farming. According to his marriage record to Sarah Mullen in 1895, he is listed as a merchant. Sarah: This marriage record is located in the Canisteo Town Hall. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. L. Box and the certificate of marriage was registered in September of 1895. It lists her residence as Canisteo, N.Y..

9. Edgar Clarkson (2.Abraham², 1.Philip¹) born 23-May-1849, Yates County, New York, Occupation: Grocery Merchant, married 1873, in Jasper, Steuben Co., New York, Eunice I. Armstrong, born Abt. 1853. Edgar died Abt. 1930, Washington State. Edgar Clarkson was agent for the Howe Sewing Machine Company. In 1873 he married Eunice Armstrong of Jasper, Steuben County, New York, who is one of the descendants of the Murphy family which is widely known in that part of the country. In the spring of 1874 he went into the grocery business in Jasper, New York and on July 21, 1893 he lost both building and stock. The loss was estimated at $3,000 over the coverage of the insurance. On February 21, 1894, he bought the Real Estate business of C.C. Aber in Canisteo and established a similar business in partnership with his brother, Thaddeus. The business was established under the name of "Clarkson Brothers." Edgar Clarkson was a member of the Troupsburg Lodge of Masons #649, but after the partnership was dissolved between Edgar and Thaddeus, Edgar moved to Niagara Falls, New York. He also went into the grocery business in Chippawa, Ontario, but again moved, this time to Washington State where he died.

Her parents died and left her an orphan. She was 8 when her father died and 12 when her mother died. She lived with Harvey and Raney Plank until she married Ray Leroy George and began housekeeping in Sylvester, near Westfield, Pa. and later in Woodhull, NY and finally in Osceola, Pa. Her funeral was from her daughter, Clara Holts' home and the Westfield Baptist Church, Tioga Co, PA. Her tombstone reads "Anna R. George, Wife of Ray". The Clarkson Family Bible says Roxy Anna Clarkson was born April 24, 1858.

Edward died 25-May-1913, Coney Island Hospital, New York. Shortly after their marriage Edward and Mary went to live on the Erie Canal where Edward was in the barge business. Edward's younger sister, Laura Amelia, lived with them on the barge. At that time the Erie Canal was 70' wide at the surface, 52' wide at the bottom and 7' deep. It could carry vessels of 240 tons with a draft of 6'. Their first two children, Ida Keziah and George Wallace, were born on the Canal. About 1880, they moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. and Edward engaged in New York Harbor and Erie Canal Shipping. He was a partner in the firm of William E. Cleary, 17 South Street, N.Y.C.. Edward was elected a Member of the Assembly in 1895 (118th session) representing the 6th Assembly District of Kings County. Edward became a member of the Assembly mainly to protect his business interests such as obtaining money appropriations to keep the canal dredged and to further the interests of incorporating the Erie Canal into the larger New York State Barge Canal. Both Edward and Mary were active in the Masons and Eastern Star after they moved to Brooklyn. Edward was initiated into Nassau Lodge #536 on March 11,1880. He was passed March 25 and raised April 28,1880. On August 1, 1889 he left Nassau Lodge and became a charter member of Minerva Lodge #792. Mary E. Clarkson joined Evangeline Charter #51 in the Brooklyn District on July 8, 1884. She later became a charter member of Day Star Chapter #81 on June 21,1891, becoming a Life Member of that Chapter on April 7, 1908. She served as Worthy Matron of Day Star Chapter in 1897. For awhile the family was quite well-to-do, the older children going to private schools and having tutors, but through some unfortunate circumstances (perhaps alcoholism) Edward lost his partnership in the Cleary firm and by 1899, before the birth of their last child, Edward and Mary were no longer living together. The Eastern Star helped Mary establish a small candy store business to support the family. Mary died at the age of 83 years, 11 months, 18 days. Marietta: She is also known by the name of Mary Coleman, which leads one to believe that she went by the name of Mary and may have been married to someone by the name of Coleman. She has been both a housewife and a candy store operator.

She married Jesse Sawyer and lived in Greene, Chenango County, NY for three years. After the death of her father, David, she bought the old homestead and returned to Troupsburg. Jesse: The OBITUARY of - Jesse J. Sawyer, Austinburg Native, Buried Today - Jesse J. Sawyer, 77 of Windsor, N.Y. a former Austinburg resident, died at his home, Monday, May 16, 1960. Ill since Christmas, Mr. Sawyer suffered a heart attack early Monday afternoon, from which he failed to recover. Funeral services will be held from the Austinburg Methodist Church, at 2 P.M., today with Rev. Carl Vanderburg, Painted Post, officiating. Burial will be made in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Austinburg. The Griggs Funeral Home is in charge of the service. Surviving are: wife, Maude; 3 sons, Kenneth of Woodhull, R. D.; Jennings of Troupsburg and Clifford of Woodhull, R.D.: a step-daughter, Madeline Norton of Binghamton; 22 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchldren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Cassie Phelps of Chenango Forks and Mrs. Cora Hulbert of Triangle, New York. Mr. Sawyer was the son of Joseph and Emma Rowley Sawyer, born in Troupsburg Township, March 7, 1883. After local schooling, he married Lena Clarkson of Woodhull, November 25, 1909. The couple farmed the Clarkson place on the Austinburg-Woodhull Road for nearly 40 years, until Mrs. Sawyer died in 1948. He moved to Windsor in 1949 and remarried. His second wife, Maude Phelps, survives. He was a member of the Austinburg Grange.

After marriage she and her husband worked the place until after the death of her father. They then moved to several different places, finally to Riverside, NY. She died of cancer in the Corning Hospital.

Harvey died 3-Feb-1948, Millerton, Pennsylvania. On Octobert 5, from 2 to 9 PM in 1946, Mr. & Mrs. George entertained at an "Open House" at their home in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married October 5 1896 at Troupsburg NY by the Rev. R.H. Rowley. They renewed their vows with a ceremony held by Rev. Palm in the presence of the family. The house was decorated with yellow flowers presented by the neighbors. They also received many gifts. In 1948, Harvey George passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lester Draper of Millerton, Pa. Funeral services were held at the Clymer Baptist Church, Saturday at 2 PM with the Rev. Cecil Palm officiating.

George died 4-Jul-1934, Kings County Hospital, New York. George Wallace Clarkson was born while the family lived on the Erie Canal on a barge. When he was about 4 the family moved to Brooklyn, NY. As a boy he attended private schools and had tutors. At the time of his marriage in 1899, he was employed as office manager and accountant with Cleary Brothers firm. One barge owned by that firm was named the "G.W. CLARKSON." George met Catherine Elizabeth McDonnell through her father Martin who was a tugboat Captain at the same time that George was involved in the barge business with Cleary. When his father, Edward, was separated from the Cleary firm, George also lost his job. He went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad Barge Canal Division. When the railroad closed down the barge division, he went to work for Armand Schmall Co. on Park Row, NYC as their traffic manager. They were importers of Russian calf skins and were put out of business by World War I. George then went to work for the North American Diamond Dye Co, New Rochelle, NY which was German owned so they were closed down by the US government. George worked as a street car conductor and in construction until finally going to work for the Brooklyn Edison Co. where he was working when he died. The family lived in various locations in Brooklyn, NY: 11th St. between 3rd and 4th Ave., 4th Ave. and 12th St., 12th St. between 5th and 6th Ave., 150 Nelson St. and 5th St and 6th Ave. George died at age 58 years, 6 months, 18 days of Tuberculosis in the Kings County Hospital. He was buried from his daughter Dorothy's home. He was buried in the same grave as his wife. Catherine: Catherine died in her home at 404 5th St. and was buried in lot 14946 Bethel Slope.

40. Lewis (Louis) M. Clarkson (16.Edward³, 5.Peter², 1.Philip¹) born 9-Feb-1891, New York City, New York, Occupation: Newspaperman, married Abt. 1929, in Silver City, New Mexico., Elizabeth Pierce, born 1910, McAllister, Oklahoma. Lewis died 9-Jan-1970, Arlington, Virginia. Lewis' first wife was a woman who had a business school where secretarial skills were taught. Lewis ran away with one of the young woman students. He was accused of violating the Mann Act, but his brother, George Wallace, helped him avoid prison. He had two sons with his first wife. (Noel & Albert, no information on either). His first wife died - no date available. It is probable Lewis abandoned his sons and his brother, George arranged for them to be placed in an orphanage. He went to Lima, Peru as the representative of The New York Foundation. He married the daughter of the President of Peru. When the government of Peru was overthrown he escaped over the Andes with a price on his head. His wife died on the escape route. Elisabeth is presumed to be his third wife. Lewis and Elisabeth were married in 1929 in Silver City, New Mexico. Elisabeth, a descendant of President Franklin Pierce, was born in McAllister, Oklahoma. Lewis has been a newspaperman with the Denver Post, the Roanoke Times, was the SEC, was a school teacher, and a business consultant. He and Elisabeth lived in Arlington, Virginia for the last years of his life. He died of emphysema.

41. William McKinley Clarkson (16.Edward³, 5.Peter², 1.Philip¹) born 25-Jan-1897, Occupation: Military Officer, married Abt. 1922, Helen McGee, born Abt. 1897. William died 1959. William was always interested in the military. He joined the army during WWI. Shortly before World War II he had been on a secret mission to Chunking, China. On his way home he was taken prisoner by the Japanese in Hong Kong. He was traveling in the guise of a civilian. If the Japanese had known he was an Army Officer they would have executed him. Later, he was exchanged along with Ambassador Grew. He served, for the balance of the war, at the Pentagon in the Adjutant General's Office, Troops Branch, in charge of all military schools. His last post was in the Phillipines. After he retired he worked for C.A.R.E., in the Phillipines and for several philanthropies in Washington, D.C. His highest rank was Lietenant Colonel. He died of lung cancer.
