DESCENDANTS OF TIMOTHY ROWLEY

1. Timothy Rowley born Abt. 1746, England., married (1) Abt. 1786, Naomi Root, born Abt. 1756, Hebron, Cornwall, Connecticut, (daughter of Daniel Root and Hannah _____) married (2) Abt. 1807, Mary ______, born 1764. Timothy died 7-Oct-1829, Urbana, Ohio. Timothy participated extensively as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His earlier origins were as Mrs. Drake writes: "Timothy was the youngest of seven sons all born in England, three of his older brothers being ship's captains plying the seas to the American Colonies among other places, when in 1761, or thereabouts at the age of 15 the lad ran away to New England. Timothy, possibly much to his displeasure, had been apprenticed out to learn the ship builder trade but getting inot an altercation one day with his employer, there verbal argument ended in an exchange of blows with his employer receiving a bit the worst of it. Young Rowley fearing punishment and the subsequent disgrace to himself and family, if imprisoned, for the bonder in those days held virtual powers of life and death other their apprentices, escaped aboard a brother's ship where he was secreted and brought to America."

Canisteo, N.Y. John died 3-Apr-1868, S. Canisteo, Steuben Co., N.Y. John Sanford Rowley, Sr., a millwright an cooper by trade, moved here from Mt. Washington, near Lake Keuka, where he had been carrying on timber operations. Having heard all of the mammoth size of the hemlocks, especially, many over three feet through and the natural waterproofer, he was anxious to purchase land at South Canisteo although his son, John Jr., a timber hewer and mill operator wished to go into Ohio, following his grandfather, Timothy. But after the prospecting trip they bought 250 acres at headwaters of Colonel Bill's and prepared to move over their families and equipment from near Bath. Having made their arrangements at the Land Office at Bath to buy the land, some of the menfolks came over to make the "cutdown" or clearings and to erect log cabins and mills in the openings. Nancy: must have been a wonderful woman and mother, besides her 13 children, she also raised her younger brother Silas, as he left Duanesburgh with her family at age 7 years. In addition, she also mothered the youngest brother of her daughter-in-law, Nancy VanHouten, namely, Simeon, after his own mother's death, besides many grandchildren that lived with her over the years. Married and a mother before she was 16, starting westward by the time she was 22 to help her husband cut out a new home and business in the wilderness with three small girls, young brother that we know of, must have taken grit and gumption, let alone stamina. Even as an old woman, she retained her natural blonde Dutch beauty as did her daughters in their old age, too. She had to be rugged and robust just to do the daily housekeeping required of a woman in those days, carrying water, tending the fireplace, washing, spinning, carding, weaving and other countless tasks.

George died 1-Dec-1909, Jasper Twp., Steuben Co., N.Y. George Thompson Rowley was named for a friend of the Rowley family. He was skidding logs at the age of 12 years old and during the winter of 1851, he and his next two younger brothers took over their father's work of lumbering, as he had injured his knee with a broad axe, working on a new barn for Erastus Kent. They drew the lumber put out by the Rowley Mill to Canisteo Center to be made up into rafts. The next Spring the boys made the trip down the Canisteo River, Susquehanna, etc. During this period, that the father was laid up with the knee injury, George was sent to Bath, N.Y. to deliver a horse that the Rowley's in their generosity had given the circuit rider of the Christian Church that visited at the Rowley home when at South Canisteo. The family had naturally expected the ministers family to put George up for the night but they sent him home, the boy making the dark, lonesome trip back down through either Stephen's or Baker's Gulches, we don't know which one, during the night to arrive home at South Canisteo. It must have been a harrowing experience as wolves and panthers were still around the countryside. He was a farmer in later years. Emily: her grandfather, Katherine Tice's father, was Captain of General Training in Pennsylvania and was murdered when Katherine was only 3 years old and he was only 23 years of age.

GEORGE: The child of George Swarthout and Olive Rowley died in March of 1875 of scarlet fever and diptheria at the same time that the children of James Eben Wilson, Jr. and Sage children died, the doctor bringing it to her from those homes. They were then living in one of the mill houses of Warren Wilson. Olive died of blood poisoning after childbirth.

The Swarthouts had a sawmill up Milwaukee Road, George, James and another brother. After his marriage to Olive, they went at once to Pittsburg where he was employed. They came back to So. Canisteo about 1874.

Olive taught the summer that she was 14 years old on the Lower Swale and the next summer at Rowley District #10. Her wedding dress was an all wool plaid, very pretty and popular at that time @@ $10. per yard. She looked very sweet with a fur cape and muff to match.

Elma: LETTER WRITTEN BY ELMA DAVIS TO ANNA TEETS: APRIL 2, 1989--Dear Anna: I have been going to write you for two months but have been more than busy taking inventory at the store. I have been bringing it home every night. Now I have it finished. It sure was hard on my eyes. I can't see as good as when I went for my last checkup. How are you feeling? The weather should soon warm up to stay. It's nice if you have someone to get your groceries. One thing that bothers me, but now it will be light longer at night. Do you get the Steuben Courier? If you you probably saw Loren's death in it. There is nothing impressive about Peter's, Loren's or Loleta's deaths. The minute they die the undertaker takes them and cremates them. No services, nothing. I feel they just throw them away. It just doesn't seem right not to have a service for them. He died in the hospital after having 3 operations all at once. I guess his heart couldn't take it. Thanks for your nice Easter card. I didn't get to Bath to get cards. I have a prospect for my store hope he will take it. At present the roof is leaking terrible. I just heard the weather, it sounds like rain all week. I don't know what I will do. I tried all last summer to get it fixed and all I got was lies. He never came to fix it. My neighbor Mrs. Preston, passed away this morning, 5 months in the hospital. it was a blessing, she went through so much. Loren and Loleta both died in February one year apart. Peter and Leo both in Dec. one year apart. Sorry I was so late writing to you. Hope I won't have to ever take inventory again. Love, Elma.
