Most of the walks described on this site presume that you have a basic level of fitness,and have a working knowledge of using a map and compass. If you are new to walking and would like to participate in this activity please do not suddenly attempt one of the higher Lakeland Summit walks listed here but start off at a more sedate level around your local fields or moors where you will be in less trouble should you become lost or injured. Also by choosing a more local walk this will give you an opportunity to practice your map reading skills by checking your surroundings and confirming this with your map and compass. In fine summer weather your choice of outdoor wear is not very critical, but do not assume that because it serves you well on low level walks that it will do as well on the high fells, because it may not. Here is a list of basic items you will need for a day's walking:

Bear in mind that the above list is a recommended minimum and is in no way a complete list of necessary equipment that may need to be carried on longer or winter walks where ice axes, crampons etc, may be needed.
