Girlfriend were an Australian pop group who formed in the 1990's. They had several hits including their debut song Take It From Me, followed by Girls Life and Without You among others from their two albums Make It Come True and It's Up To You. Girlfriend had a wholesome image and was well known for their funky flares and flower hats. Their fashion had such an influence on young girls that they released their own clothing label. After touring Europe and Japan, Robyn, the lead singer of the group, left Girlfriend to start her solo career. Girlfriend underwent a huge makeover in an attempt to remove their "nice girl" image and became known as gf4. After their songs Sooner or Later and Need Love To Make The Sex Right were unsuccessful in the charts, they spiralled into oblivion. How it all began Jacqui, Melanie and Siobhann met at dancing school in the Sydney beach suburb of Coogee, when they were only three years old. Years later, they decided they wanted to form an all-girl pop group with two of their other friends at the school. Their dance teacher, Janice Breen, introduced the girls to Noel MacDonald, a well-known Sydney singer, writer and jingle producer, who realised what great potential the girls had. Noel MacDonald came up with the name Girlfriend and began writing material. Things began getting serious and two of the girls (one by the name of Tasmin) dropped out due to lack of commitment and because their parents believed they should concentrate on school. Noel MacDonald introduced Robyn, who he'd seen singing at Australia's Wonderland in Sydney, to the group. They auditioned Lorinda and Girlfriend was formed. Girlfriend met Kelly Abbey (JoJo in E Street), who became their choreographer. They practiced dancing, recorded some songs and made a demo video. It took a year of self-promotion and sending their demos to record companies before they finally landed a deal with BMG. After wowing audiences at the BMG conference on the old Coast and playing shows at Darling Harbour every weekend for 5 weeks, they finally released Take It From Me early in 1992 and it shot to the top of the charts.
