Donna Lefler, Nancy Seward, Delores Roper and Nancy Galaway of the GFWC Fairmont Woman’s Club attended the 113th GFWC Nebraska Federation of Women’s Club convention May 21-23, 2009 at the New World Inn in Columbus, Nebraska.
Featured speakers during the convention were Rose Ditto, GFWC International President; Kevin Waneke, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House in Omaha; Lori Miller, Domestic Violence Counselor; Bill Lucky, President Nebraska Pork Producer’s Associations; Jessica Kolterman, Director of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation; and Mary Ellen Ducey, UNL Archivist.
Highlighted at the convention from Fairmont were Jenna Cassidy, 2009 NFWC Scholarship winner and Nancy Galaway, nominee for the Jennie Award.
From Fillmore Central Middle school two students won first place in the Poetry and Short story contest. They are Jacob Galusha in poetry and Derek O’Connor in short story. These entries will go on to the international contest. Nancy Galaway of the GFWC Fairmont Woman’s Club won second place in the short story adult division. From the Fillmore Central Middle School Kurt Karcher won first place and Best of Show for his water color and Danny Wythers won a 2nd place for his pop art. Lea Johnson won first place in Adult Art for her oil painting and first place in crafts with her Mr. T doll. Lisa Nichols of Fairmont won first place in Crafts with her quilt and second place with her wall hanging.
Nancy Seward won one of the five gift baskets furnished by each of the NFWC districts.
Donna Lefler gave the memorial service at the convention for members of NFWC who had passed away since the last convention. Those members from the Fairmont Club were Mary Berggren and Theresa Schepers.
The GFWC Fairmont Woman’s Club won awards for their work during the 2007-2008 club year in Conservation, education, ESO, Home Life, International Affairs, Public Affairs, Membership, History, Public Relations, Fundraising and Leadership. The GFWC Fairmont Woman’s Club has 25 members that completed 75 projects and/or programs. Members donated 1,039 volunteer hours and donated $1,477 for these projects.
