This Week's Exciting Puzzle: the Euchre Tourney

This puzzle appeared in Volume 77, Issue 4 (June 5, 1998) of mathNEWS,
and was co-authored by Andrea Knowles.

After playing tiddlywinks, Amy and Beth played in a Euchre tournament. They played well and made it to the finals where they were paired up against two students from the University of Guelph. When this last hand was dealt the score was 9-8 in favour of our duo. Can you figure out which position they sat in, what cards they started playing with and which pair won? All cards will be stated rank first (AKQJT9) and suit second (S,H,D,C).

Rules and instructions for how to play Euchre can be found here.

  1. The four players are: Amy (who does not have the AD), the person with the QS and the JS, the person with the QD, and the person who played north.
  2. When the opening lead of the KC is made, everyone follows suit. Then West leads.
  3. West has four black cards.
  4. After the bower was picked up, the kitty had 2 red and 2 black cards (three of which are nines), and no trump. The dealer's lowest card then became a Queen. The dealer was not ordered up.
  5. South has no queens, Krista has no kings.
  6. James is sitting to the left of the person with two aces, and to the right of the person with the king and ten of trump.
  7. One round was: QS, AS, 9H, KS.
  8. Dealer and dealer's partner have two pairs. Both have at least one ace.
  9. Neither Amy nor West dealt or opened.
  10. Beth and East were both dealt two clubs, and won one trick each.
  11. Three of the players are void in one suit each.
  12. The ace of trump was directly overtaken by a bower.
  13. Another round was: JS, JH, 10D, 10H. This trick was won by the person to the left of Krista.
  14. East has a five card straight.
  15. There are only 3 diamonds in play.
  16. The East-West pair hold only the left bower and the lowest trump.
