| Canada in the World - in the 1920's, Canada was prosperous, happy and wealthy. People were using the stock market as an easy way to get rich. Stocks and stock values were soaring, and everyone was content in the knowledge that their families would be taken care of for generations to come. But in 1929, to everyone's amazement and shock, the market crashed, bringing some stocks down to a value below zero. |
| News of the crash was in all the papers everywhere. It was the of of the most disasterous events in history, putting a lot of people out of jobs, in poverty and the whole world into a horrible depression. |

| Many people lost their jobs and a lot of money because of the stock market crash. Prices for everything skyrocketed and many people were unable to afford even the simplest necessities, like bread and milk. |
| Science and Technology - In 1929, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. It was called the "miracle drug" because it healed almost any illness at that time. |
| Penicillin works by destroying bacteria and and interfering with the bacteria's ability to synthesize its cell wall, eventually rupturing the wall. |
