Overview:

Prior to becoming a legionnaire in the Legiones Marianes, Principes Nestor Hammond had served in the Cavanaugh’s Cavalry for most of his adult life. In January of 3063, the Cavalry was in the employ of the Illyrian Palatinate when future Caesar Julius O’Reilly made his first conquest for the Hegemony. When Captain Cavanaugh accepted Julius’ offer to stand down and join the MHAF their futures were secured and irreversible. Nestor, as one of the thirteen survivors of the brief Illyrian campaign, would form the core of the new Legio VI. Life for the former Cavalrymen was not easy as the Caesar’s personal liaison, Rudolf Kess,   watched over them like a shepherd watched over his flock.

Between July 3063 and January 3066, VI Legio grew from two under strength cohorts to three full cohorts with attached auxiliaries and an aerospace wing. With this growth, Nestor was promoted to Centurion and given command of a century in the newly formed Tertia Cohors. While Captain Cavanaugh was now the Prefect of the VI Legio, he had to disperse his former subordinates throughout his command and still managed to keep eight of the original thirteen in the Prima Cohors. In January of 3066, the long anticipated invasion of the Circinus Federation began with III Legio and VI Legio assaulting Maximillian and Blantleff, respectively. The initial wave of the invasion went without any major difficulty as the Circinian people greeted the Legions as liberators, rather than as conquerors. Nestor and his Warhammer came through the assault relatively unscathed and he would spend the next four months in relative ease and comfort.

Hell broke loose in May, as the VI Legio was attacked by a Federation unit masquerading as the IV Legio. Prefect Cavanaugh had been killed in the Federation’s initial assault and when the news spread through the legion, the resulting counterattack by the inexperienced troops was both brutal and efficient. Nestor and his Warhammer acquitted themselves well, including the destruction of a Crusader that was about to take Principes Kess out of the battle. His Warhammer would later fall as it was shot from behind by a Bandersnatch. His Warhammer fell forward, causing his engine shielding to crack and force a shutdown. He would spend the rest of the battle trapped in his cockpit.

After the battle, Nestor was promoted to Principes under the recommendation of newly promoted Legatus Kess. Now dispossessed he was given the now headless Bandersnatch that had been taken him down as his new ‘Mech. It had no arms and one of its legs severed, but the legion’s Techs worked wonders with what little they had in stores and had scrounged from the battlefield. Along with two PPCs and SRM-6 salvaged from his old Warhammer, they added a total of four RL-10s, six salvaged double heat sinks and two tons of extra armor.

As an additional reward, Prefect Albert Deveraux, Prefect Cavanaugh’s replacement, gave him command of the Prima Cohors’ Second   Maniple for saving the life the Cohors new commander, Legatus Rudolf Kess.
