Overview:

During the Ghost Bear War, then Tai-I Shigeru Nakano commanded the Recon Company of the Ninth Pesht Regular’s Second Battalion. The Ghost Bears in their fury struck the Ninth on the world of Idlewind. The sheer brutality of the attack broke the Ninth and the their line collapsed after their commander died. With his Jenner already seriously damaged, he knew he could not survive for long in a duel. Nakano chose to retreat back to the spaceport and board the waiting   DropShips. His Jenner was one of only eleven Regulars ‘Mechs to leave Idlewind. Rather than being sent to one of the many rebuilding Pesht regiments, Shigeru retired. Still wanting to fight, he made the decision to journey to the Game World, Solaris VII.

The journey was long, arduous and fraught with many delays due to the growing Civil War in the Federated Commonwealth. After spending nearly eighteen months aboard DropShips, JumpShips and space station, Nakano finally arrived on Solaris VII in September of 3064. After setting himself up in a small apartment in Kobe, he made his way around the major stables in the zone. After meeting resistance at both the Delon and Silver Dragon stables, he was given an opportunity by Mitsuhara Toranaga of the Toranaga Stables. After reviewing Shigeru’s service record, Toranaga then sponsored him for a Class Four license and stuck him in the lone ‘Mech in his stable that did not have a pilot, a DAI-02 Daikyu.

Now this model of the Daikyu was nearly ideal for combat on Solaris VII. It had a strong mix of energy and missile weapons. It was jump capable and had decent armor protection for a ‘Mech of its size. However, after his first fight in the Daikyu, he found that it lacked the one weapon he needed for fighting in close quarters, a melee weapon. The crowds loved them and they did wonderful damage to an enemy’s ‘Mech.
After some consultation with the technicians, he selected the hatchet. In order to mount the hatchet, the six-tube Streak launcher in the right torso was removed along with one ton of ammunition. The C3 slave unit was replaced by an ER medium laser, which was mounted in the right arm.

To better take advantage of the confined spaces of many of the arenas, Shigeru thought it was best to replace the ER PPC with three medium pulse lasers. This not only improved the ‘Mech’s overall accuracy, but it would help lower the overall heat burden on the Daikyu’s heat sinks. After the weapons were added, a ton and a half armor was spread over the ‘Mech to give Shigeru the maximum amount of protection.

For fights in more open conditions, Shigeru has the technician replace the left arm mounted pulse lasers with an ER large laser and a fourth ER medium laser. While this pushes the heat curve up, it does allow Shigeru to strike at range before closing for the kill.
