In The Footsteps of The Regiment - Italy Recce 2008
photo

Early in 2008 LCols Friesen and Dorfman and Major Mezzabotta started talking about visiting Italy to follow the footsteps of the Regiment and to visit the battlefields and the cemeteries where most of our fallen comrades were buried in the Second World War.

After much discussion and the addition of Sergeant P. Scherer to the team, The
Liri Valley Gang was formed and it was decided that May 8 to 20 was a possible date for the trip.

You can now track the progress of the group, through a series of daily reports made available below:

To the anonymous "NCO" who delivers low blows...I suggest you should have at least the balls to identify yourself. Actually, I have a better idea. Please disassociate yourself completely with any Regimental associations and we'll all be better off. Harry Tye.

What timing. My father served with the GGHG during the War. (Norman Stewart) nickname Buster C SQN. My two brothers and myself have been talking about tracing the GGHG route from England to Italy and then on into Europe. At the end of your adventure would be possible to obtain copies of your maps so that we may follow the same routes.

Thanks again

We will be producing a detailed "do it yourself" summary with directions to War Cemetaries and battle guides. Look for an update through the Assoc site over the next couple of months. Delighted that you are interested.

I work with a co-worker whose father served in the Italy Campaign in 1944 with the regiment. His father has passed on but shared with him before he passed away, that he was in a group picture after one the battles (standing around some recce vehicles and tanks) and the picture showed up on "Stars/Stripes" or "The Maple Leaf" in 1944. Do you know if the regiment keeps a detailed pictorial history of their deployments from 1944 (and newspaper clippings)
He told me it would mean alot him (and his family) to have a picture of his father when he served in Italy.

I found this blog very interesting as the son of a veteran (now deceased) who was there Trp Sgt Henry Alfred Starkey. My father had little to say to his two sons about his war experience but nevertheless conveyed upon us the importance of respect for his and others of his peers deeds during those years. Rememberance by successive generations is critical.
