Welcome to The Sketchbook. This is my personal site, devoted to my artwork. Here, I'll hope to tell you a little about me, because, well, I hate it when artists only showcase their work, and don't get personal about it. Art is always personal. The pudgy guy below is me, Donal DeLay-Weiss, otherwise known as the Myopic Malcontent Weasel on message boards.
Myopic Malcontent Weasel
~ "A little weasel can't change
the world, just live in it."
-Donal DeLay-Weiss
Name: Donal DeLay-Weiss.
D.O.B.: 6/11/78
I was born in Aurora, Ill. (No Wayne's World jokes,
please) and, being a former Army brat, have lived all over
the world from 12 states in the US, to Japan, and Korea. As of
now, I reside in Hell, but the locals call it "Florida".
Favorite Music:
I listen to a lot of different music ranging
from classical Beethoven, to classic rock, to heavy metal, to
modern Rap. It depends on my mood, really, and what I'm drawing
at the moment; I'm a big classic rock fan. I love The Beatles,
The Doors, Ozzy, and, of course, Guns N Roses, Nirvana and
Pearl Jam. I'll never tire of GnR. Marylin Manson always gets me in a creative mood, and I like
Korn's sound, but not their vocals; I'm creative when I listen to heavy
industrial rock.
Favorite Movies:
Anything by Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, and Orson Welles.
Maltese Falcon, Usual Suspects, and Fight
Club.
Favorite Anime:
Although I don't watch a lot of anime, I do love Akira, Ghost In
The Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and just anything else
by Gainax. And Franken Gears; a brilliant nine-minute short in
Robot Carnival that is an adaption of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.
Favorite Tv Show:
Simpson, Futurama, Batman, Batman Beyond, Aeon Flux, and the two epidoes of Clerks are funny as hell.
Favorite Book/Comic:
Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, The Devil's Dictionary, and any Sherlock Holmes adventures for novels. Sin City, Battle Chasers, Steampunk, Transmetropolitan, Blade Of The Immortal, Steam Detectives, and Gunsmith Cats for comics.
Favorite Artists:
Frank Miller, Travis Charest, Joe Madureira, and Scott McDaniel. Chris Bachalo, Joe Benitez, Trent Kaniuga, Joe (God) Quesada, and David Mack. Jason Pearson, Duncan Reuleu, Duncan Fegredo, and Jeff Matsuda. Sam Liu, Chap Yeap, Rob Haynes and Eric Canete.
Inspiration:
My muse; My loving girlfriend, Kim, who can be seen in the above pictures. She's my soulmate, and I love her dearly. And yes, I'm this sappy in real life.
How do you pass time?
When I'm not with my girlfriend, with whom I try to spend as much time as possible, I draw, read, or go online.
Favorite Saying:
"I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him." -Booker T. Washington.
"I haven't failed, I found 10,000 ways that don't work." -Ben Franklin.
And the two main page quotes by Paul Gauguin, and Picasso.
Current Projects:
Damnation occupies all of my time for now, but, when I do get free time to do stuff, it's the Spooks, and Ravi for an underground zine called All Star Productions, DnA, and another of my own concepts that I'm not about to reveal yet.
Artistic Beliefs:
Art is a way for the soul to speak; Let it express itself when it so desires, and the groove will flow. But if you try to control it, the end result affects not only you, but your future creativity. Don't stifle your creativity, just go with it, and be proud of it. I know it sounds pretentious as hell, but, it's what I believe. Creativity in any form is beautiful, and censoring it says nothing about the artist, but a lot about he who censors.
Let your soul speak, and let it speak volumes as it grows. The only way for it to grow is to nurture it with experimentation.
