Narrator's Introduction

At one time, gods and demons were as one. They were sealed away in the abyss of distant memory. The hearts of humans who feared the Dark brought this about. For the present, let us call these beings "Shinma" [ Japanese for gods and demons ]. Now they have awakened from their slumber and gathered in the Dark. On the final night of that gathering, when Shinma and humans met again, a young girls strayed into their midst. This is her story. Her name is... Kyuuketsuki Hime Miyu [ Vampire Princess Miyu ].

...

- How about tomorrow?

- Sure!

- Ok then. The Shijou Station ticket counter at one o' clock. Don't be late.

- Trust me! ... I'm sorry. But don't worry. I'll be there tomorrow. I promise!

- Yeah, right! ... Ryooko, are you sure you don't want me to walk you home?

- No. It's really close by.

- Take care, then.

- Ok. See you tomorrow!

Episode I: Ayakashi no Miyako

Unearthly Kyoto

- Excuse me for a moment. Please take your time.

- Thank you.

...

- This is the fifth one, right, sir? Not a drop of blood left in her body.

- How can something so... ridiculous... happen?

- Just like a vampire... Could that be what it is?

- Cut that out! The coroner's looking into it right now. Don't say stupid things like that again!

...

- Man, it's hot! ... Fine! ... A rash of vampiric attacks had set the old capital of Kyoto abuzz wth rumor. I was visiting there on a consultation. The request came from the parents of a princess who had pricked her finger on the thorn of a rose. ... Spiritualist. A one-word job title that covers a variety of activities. But those with truly string spiritual powers have a hard time making a living using them. ... Heh. Garlic. ... You said she's been asleep for sisty days now. Have you taken her to a doctor?

- The doctors gave her up in the first week as hopeless.

- We also had an eminent high priest take a look at her. But, at that time, all he told us was that something had possessed her.

- I see. ... Possession. This phenomenon, which can usually be explained as some form of psychosis, is still an obect of terror, something smoldering in the depths of the Japanese soul. But in fact, one rarely, if ever, comes across a true case of possession. ... A fox spirit? ... It seems she truly is possessed. Allow me to deal with this in my own way. This'll be informal, but... [ Hime performs a religious chant from Budhist scriptures].

...

- I'm sorry. I'll forego my fee, naturally.

- Um... There are rumors going around about a vampire appearing in the town.

- Stop talking nonsense!

- I saw it! Here it is, middle of summer, yet there was a person near the house... all covered in cloth.

- Stop it!

- No, hold on a minute...

...

- It looks like I may not have to give up my fee just yet. My instincts are usually right where money is involved. ... What do you think you're doing?

- I'm going to kill the vampire!

...

- So... your girlfriend was the vampire's...

- Yeah... first victim.

...

- Ryooko! ... Ryo... Ryooko?!

...

- I saw it! I saw that creature, that thing in white, go into that house!

- Based on that, you think the vampire is in that house?

- It's got to be! That thing's the vampire... the thing that ran past me in the night... It was the killer! If it stays at large, there will be more victims. I can't let anyone else suffer like I have!

- Miyahito... but, by yourself...!

- To keep that from happening, I've got to kill it!

...

- Vampiric killings... One thing common to all victims was that they were all female. Hm... a grade school student, a high school student, a college student, a businesswoman, and a housewife... five in all...

...

- Fog, inhuman strength, glowing eyes, fangs... hm... Just like the vampires of legend, it would seem. But perhaps a bit too faithful to the legend... I don't think you should get any further involved in this. [ girl's laughter ].

...

- What was that? It didn't seem like a little girl. If Aiko is the vampire, what motive did she have for attacking those five women? For that matter, do vampires really exist at all?

...

- Vampire! ... How... how can it exist ... in broad daylight like this? ... Vampire! That's what you are, isn't it?

- Yes, I am a vampire. But it would seem I'm not the monster you're thinking of.

- You... you prey even on Miyahito!

- But... It's what he desired.

- You lie!

- If a human so desires, I can give him immortality... time everlasting... But the thing that we, as well as you, are chasing after is different. It is only a murderer, capable of bestowing nothing. Just a bloodthirsty immitation vampire. ... Yes, it is of the Shinma, beings that are both god and monster. I don't think you should get involved in this any further, really... Spiritualist Himiko.

- You have no right to say such things! Vampire! Monster!

- People always talk like that, with clouded eyes and tainted lips, even though the truth is always within them.

...

- Miyahito, are you alright? Let's go to a hospital immediately.

- Why?

- Wh... "Why?" Don't you realize... what just happened?

- I feel terrific now.

- You... you were consumed with grief...

- There isn't any now.

...

- What did you just say?

- The car rolled over, with Aiko and her parents inside...

- A rollover?!

- There was a chance we could save her, if we operated... but not her parents. However, we were out of the AB blood we needed for the operation, as we had already performed a number of emergency operations that day. Perhaps the parents realized their own deaths were at hand, as they volunteered to donate their own blood to their daughter. I had no choice but to accept. Aiko's parents died while she was still on the operating table.

- Does Aiko know about her parent's blood?

- Possibly. I've heard that, at the orphanage, she called herself a vampire.

...

- Surviving by stealing her mother and father's blood... If she was berating herself like that...

...

- [ "... even though the truth is always within them..." ] * recollection

...

- How can her parents be here when they're supposed to be dead? Ghosts? Oh, hell...! ... The vampire... The victims were a grade school student, a high school student, a college student, a businesswoman, and a housewife... women... futures closed off... that would otherwise have existed! ... Ai... Aiko...?

...

- What are you doing?! Are you planning on getting Aiko as well?

...

- This is the form of the creature that used Aiko's soul.

- U... used?!

- In return for illusionary parents, a house, and dreams... it drained her of life. ... Shinma. A fitting name for those which are both god and demon. One of them--this one--took up residence in her dreams. It is easy for a diseased human soul to invite the Shinma in.

- Shin... ma...?

- Larva, return it to the Dark with its true name!

- Ra... en? ... Ra... en?

- More commonly known as Baku, I think. The Shinma who dwells in dreams. It uses human dreams as the source of its power.

- And with its true name discovered, the monster loses its power, am I right?

- All that remains is to seal it away.

...

- What about Aiko?

- She's dead... because when people are taken over by Shinma, their lives are taken from them.

- Couldn't you have saved her?

- There was only one way... But you interfered, didn't you? She could have taken my blood and become a vampire. ... Himiko, I don't know whether she would have preferred continuing to live, believing that she was the vampire that killed her parents, to dying. But as for Miyahito, he wanted to escape from his grief... Himiko. So I gave him his own little world of fantasy. So he should be feeling more happiness than he could wish for in this world. It's true, Himiko. Well, goodbye.

- I don't believe... in such fantasy worlds...

...

- Hey, hey! They say he's been like that for ages.

- He's famous around here.

- He's weird, huh?

- Uh-huh!

- I know about him.

- What?

- He's living in happiness.

- Huh?!

- What?!

- What do you mean?

- Wouldn't you like to be able to be happy forever?

- Huh?!

- That's weird!

- It sure is!

- Let's go. We'll be late for school!

- Yeah, let's go!

...

- I, a spiritualist who didn't believe in the existence of demons... I will hunt down that little devil... that vampire girl who disappeared without even telling me her name. My happiness isn't so trivial that it can be found in a fantasy.
