Cahawba's Negro Burial Ground

This cemetery was created around 1819, probably as a slave cemetery. After emancipation, African-Americans continued to use this graveyard. The last known burial was in 1957.

Only a few headsones remain. The following are people known to be buried here.

Amelia Stark-Her and her husband, Shadrack, had three children.

Albert-Died June 5,1860.

Edward Craig;Tennessee Pvt.,1st Cl. 368 Inf., 92 Div. Died May 31,1920.

Andrew Arthur-Sept. 8,1886 to Jan. 8,1957.

Sam Arthur; Alabama Wagoner, 814 Pioneer Inf., World War I; March 10,1887; died Jan. 3,1953.

Virginia, daughter of Margaret Perrine; Born July 23,1856; died July 7,1857.

Laura, wife of George Hatcher; died May 16,1863.

The Boy Scouts of America made this cemetery accessable to the public in 1996 by cutting trails.
