Greenwich High junior Liz Cannone recorded victories in the 100 and 200 meters for the Cardinals during the team's 91-45 loss to Wilton in the season-opening meet yesterday.

Cannone's times of 12.5 and 25.6 in the 100 and 200 respectively have already qualified her for the state meet. Cannone will not be alone once the prestigious year-end meet rolls around as teamniate Erika Detjen also qualified for states in the 100 after clocking in at 13.4 during her second-place run yesterday.

Detjen, Lara Levine, Liz Cannone, and Christina Cannone hooked up to capture the 4x100 meter relay in resounding fashion. The foursome hit the tape in 52.1, over five seconds faster than runner-up Wilton.

"Overall, this meet wasn't too bad for us," GHS coach Alvarez Symonette said. "Wilton is a very good team with many experienced veterans. Almost two-thirds of our team is made up of ninth graders. I believe we are going to see some really good things happen though."

Sophomore Rebecca Mond recorded second place finishes in the high jump (4'4) and tnple jump (29'1”) to go along wite a third place effort in the long jump (12'7 ½”) for Greenwich. Freshman Liz Selbst took second in the discus with a toss of 56'10” while fellow newcomer Caitlin Breen ran a 5:56.9 to earn a runner-up finish in the 1,600 meters.

Margot Fairbanks was also impressive for Greenwich, tak- ing third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.3.
