RE: GHS Indoor Track Fax - 01-02

This is the second in a series of new letters giving details about the Indoor Track & Field program at Greenwich HS during the winter of 2000-2001. Even though the sport is called Indoor Track, the only things "indoor" about it from now on are the competition sites; with the onset of the latest snow, our track training facility is gone for perhaps the rest of the winter-thus you will now see us in the parking lots and on the snow fields and the occassional hallway or science wing, but for the most part we are outside. We are still maintaining about 60 members which means 2 buses to regular FCIAC Meets. We are hoping in another meet or two to be reduced to one bus and make our life a little bit easier.

Sat, Jan. 6-Staples, Westport- We opened the new year with an exciting meet at Staples (this track is 160 m vs. the 150 m of Wilton, thus a bit faster and obviously more spectator friendly). Right away, we began to get state and county qualifiers. Remember "S" means state qualifier and "C" means county qualifier. Boys 50 m: Resnick 6.2 S, Kitselman 6.5 C, & Lowin 6.5 C (Jeremiah is a sophomore and is new to the program). In the girls 50 m: Cannone 6.6 S (#2 @ GHS) is her first win over Gaymon of Bridgeport Central (State/N.E. Champion). Also, C's from Detjen (7.3), Finger (7.4), and James (7.4) (both sophomores are new). In the girls 300, Rochester got a C at 47.3, while in the 800 Reimers got an S winning in 2:33 with Wolfgang picking up a C at 2:44. In the boys 1000 m, Rafaelle got a C at 2:54 and Wilkinson a C at 3:08, while in the girls 3200 m, Lorenzen added a C with a time of 13:05. Thea is also new to us, as is Meghan. We showed continued strength in the hurdles: on the boys side, Kitselman got an S in 2nd place with 7.4, wwhile Enthoven and McDonald at 8.7 got C's. In the girl's hurdles, Rochester got a C with 9.3. We got two field qualifiers with Resnick at 11' in the pole vault and Mond a very significant PR in the long jump at 14'3.25". This is really kind of amazing because Mond virtually can't practice LJ. Last summer, Mond set our Frosh and Varsity triple jump records at the Nutmeg Games.

Our relays also did well, the girls 4X1.5 was 3rd overall with another come from behind heat win - they are called the flying Fuiia's in honor of Jen Puiia of the University of Maine's relay teams. 5th's went to another girls 4X1.5, boys 4X1.5, boys 4X2.5, and the girls SMR.

Next: we return to Staples on 1/13 for another qualifying meet. Start 10 am, finish 3 pm. We will try to move around a few members and have fewer 50 m runners.

Yale: 1/19 girls DMR at 6 pm. 1/20 boys 3k, pole vault, girls long jump, and girls 4X200 during the day. Most of the team will go to the regular meet at Wilton (9:30 am).

Thanks: to our loyal fans-parents noted as Cannone, Ayers, Kitselman, Robinson, Resnick, Gamanos/Richards, Low, Rafaelle, Breen, Webb, and Salvo - and anyone else we missed. Also, alum Mike Gamanos '00. Please make yourselves know to us at the meets. Directions available for all.
