‘El Matador’, Marcelo Salas Melinao, joined
Juventus FC from S.S. Lazio in the summer of 2001 after a surprisingly low
scoring final season for the Rome club. The Chilean national team captain netted
just seven times in his 21 league games for Lazio in what was an unhappy season
overall, full of off-the-field wrangles between player and management. It was
the first time he had failed to make double figures in three seasons in Italy.
Despite that hiccough, Salas’ time in Italy has been a clear success; his 23
goals in all competitions in 1999 helping Lazio to UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup glory
and second place in the league. He then scored the winning goal versus
Manchester United FC in the UEFA Super Cup that preceded the 1999/00 campaign.
That season the prolific striker scored 12 league goals and this time the Rome
club won the Italian title for only the second time in their history. Quick,
cunning, impressive with both feet and commanding in the air, Salas remains one
of the world’s top strikers. He has averaged a goal every two games for Chile,
and represented them at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Before heading to Italy, he won
two league titles in Chile and three league titles in Argentina.
