Paolo Montero Date Of Birth: September 9th 1967 Country: Uruguay Position: Defender Ronald Paolo Iglesias Montero joined Juventus FC from Atalanta BC in 1995, and has gone on to become a veritable rock at the heart of the Turin club’s defence. Upon signing he became the second Uruguayan to join Juventus; the first was Raúl Banfi in 1941/42. He was then joined by countryman Fabian O’Neill in 2000. Able to play as an out and out central defender or in the left-back position, Montero’s determination and aggressiveness are his two main qualities, combining to make him a real handful for any striker. Renowned for always giving his all on the pitch, it is this over exuberance that occasionally gets him into trouble with referees and which has led to a considerable number of suspensions. He is the captain of the Uruguayan national team, while his father also won 45 caps for his country. Injury caused him to miss the entire UEFA Champions League campaign of 2000/01. |
