I knew that I was adopted from a very young age, I always wondered what my birthmother looked like and if she was still alive and where she was.I was born in Detroit Michigan in 1961. I really didnt start looking for her until I was 25 years old. I sign up with a adoption registry called The International Soundex Registry. It is a registry that matches up the adoptee and the birthparents if they both register. I didnt get an immediate response from them and kinda forgot about it. Then about 6 years later I had my adoption records opened and found out a few more things about my birthmother. I made some phone calls and talked to some people in Michigan that might be able to help me but then put the search on hold. Well, a few years ago I heard that I could petition the court to open up the records and contact my birthmother and if she wanted to meet me then it would happen. It cos about $300.00 but I thought it was worth it. I was waiting to hear back from the court when I got a message on my answering machine one day back in August 1999 from Soundex Registry. I thought that there might be a chance that I had found her but I didnt want to get too excited but I did call them from my cell phone in the hall in front of my class at school. After a few questions from the lady at the registry to make sure I was who I was, she tells me that there had been a match, I nearly passed out!!! I never thought that I would find her. I got so excited I left class and went home to call her. I was shaking all the way home. Ends up shes still in Michigan, we talked for hours and I got to ask her questions that I thought I'd never have answers to, it was one of the best days of my life.
Long story short....My half sister Robin and my Mom came to California to visit in October. My adoption Mother Barbara, my kids and my dear old friend (I've known her since we were in 3rd grade) Tammy got a limo and picked them up from the Airport. They stayed for a week and we had a great time. I have been blessed, not only did I find my birthmom but everything turned out so well. I'm very close with my sister, we have alot in common and it all good. I have a great half brother too and I also love my birthmothers husband Pete. They are all great.
Robin and her boyfriend John came out for christmas and New Years Eve 1999 and Robin came out again in for my birthday for a week. Me and my daughter Devon went for a visit with the Michigan family in August 2000.
My sister and her friend Kristen made a surprise visit this past weekend for my 40th birthday!! She totally surprised me and showed up at my door! It was great. Life is great. |
