 TURN OF THE CENTURY

Words by Robin & Barry Gibb

Everything's happening

At the turn of the century.

I'm gonna find myself a time machine,

Go to the turn of the century.

And all those people passing by

And the town crier makes his cry

At the turn of the century,

Turn of the century,

Turn of the century.

Big white hats and men in spats,

With those horseless carriages

And there are lots of things to do,

On a bicycle built for two,

At the turn of the century,

Turn of the century.

Everything's happening

At the turn of the century.

I'm gonna find myself a time machine,

Go to the turn of the century.

And all those people passing by

And the town crier makes his cry

At the turn of the century,

Turn of the century,

Turn of the century.

HOLIDAY

Words by B & R Gibb

Oh, you're a holiday,

Such a holiday.

Oh, you're a holiday,

Such a holiday.

It's something I think's worthwhile,

If the puppet makes you smile.

If not, then you're throwing stones,

Throwing stones, throwing stones.

Oh, it's a funny game

Don't believe that it's all the same

Can't think what I've just said,

But there's some fellow on my bed.

Yet millions of eyes can see,

Yet why am I so blind?

When there's someone else that's me,

It's unkind, it's unkind.

Dee dee dee dee dee dee

Dee dee dee dee dee

Dee dee dee dee dee dee

Dee dee dee dee dee

Yet millions of eyes can see,

Yet why am I so blind?

When there's someone else that's me,

It's unkind, it's unkind.

Oh you're a holiday,

Every day's such a holiday,

Now it's my turn to say

And I say you're a holiday.

It's something I think's worthwhile,

If the puppet makes you smile.

If not, then you're throwing stones,

Throwing stones, throwing stones.

Dee dee dee dee dee dee

Dee dee dee dee dee

Dee dee dee dee dee dee

Dee dee dee dee dee

RED CHAIR FADE AWAY

Words by B & R Gibb

Red chair fade away,

Bring back memories,

Think of Sunday nights,

Fragrant lemon trees.

I can feel the speaking sky.

I don't want to know

It's filling up the air.

Grandpa's fairy tales,

Red chair round the fire,

Rainbows all the time,

We're all going higher.

I can feel the speaking sky.

I don't want to know

It's filling up the air.

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Bring back memories,

Think of Sunday nights,

Fragrant lemon trees.

I can feel the speaking sky.

I don't want to know

It's filling up the air.

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away,

Red chair fade away.

ONE MINUTE WOMAN

Words by B & R Gibb

One minute woman, please,

I go down on my knees

To say to you,

With the words so true,

"I love you."

I fail to understand

Why you don't want my hand.

I try to find what's on your mind.

I wonder

Why don't you stop and see

Why you're not loving me?

Would it hurt to say hello

I don't  know?

One minute woman, please,

I go down on my knees

To say to you,

With the words so true,

"I love you."

Why don't you stop and see

Why you're not loving me?

Would it hurt to say hello?

I don't  know.

One minute woman, please,

I go down on my knees

To say to you,

With the words so true,

"I love you."

I love you.

I love you.

IN MY OWN TIME

Words by B & R Gibb

I received an invitation:

"Come to the United Nations".

That was when I was somebody,

Sitting, selling hot cross buns,

A thousand suckers every one.

Sounds just like a nursery rhyme

In my own time.

Even when the lights go out,

I still have things to think about;

Memories I can't go by

In my own time,

In my own time.

EVERY CHRISTIAN LION HEARTED MAN WILL SHOW YOU

Words by B R & M Gibb

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

"Take this in hand,"

Said he who stands

Behind the chair,

A broken table there.

Every Christian lion hearted man will show you,

Every Christian lion hearted man will show you.

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

Don't walk so tall

Before you crawl.

For every child

Is thinking of something wild.

Every Christian lion hearted man will show you.

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

Every Christian lion hearted man will show you.

Every Christian lion hearted man will show you.

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

O solo Domini

CRAISE FINTON KIRK ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS

B & R Gibb

He smiled and rubbed the stubble on his chin.

He sure shall find the weariness and dreariness of life that's growing thin,

Yet he didn't have so very far to go.

With a pencil in his hand he would travel on as planned,

Where the mist up in the mountain threw a light.

Craise Finton Kirk, see him go on his way.

Oh they don't know where he is.

Very, very nice,

Very very nice.

Even in the morning when he slept
Something odd is missing
There's nothing very much to talk about
And nothing very much to see
Craise Finton Kirk, see him go, on his way
oh they don't know where he is
Very very nice, very very nice
Talks about the place he'd like to go
And you never see the worrying and hurrying and that makes a person slow
Yet you wouldn't think he'd be so hard to find
Yet he looks so very busy but there's nothing on his mind
And his wavy hair continues not to grow
Craise Finton Kirk, see him go, on his way
oh they don't know where he is
Very very nice, very very nice
Craise Finton Kirk, see him go, on his way
Oh they don't know where he is
Very very nice, very very nice

NEW YORK MINING DISASTER 1941

Words by Robin & Barry Gibb

This song was inspired by the tragic Aberfan disaster of 1966, in which the children of a school in this Welsh town were killed by a huge landslide. As it was so soon after the incident, the Bee Gees disguised it as a fictitious disaster, so that nobody would be unduly distressed by the song.  It was their first British single, released in April 1967. Many people mistook them for the Beatles, who had greatly influenced them in their songwriting and singing styles since their tour of Australia.

In the event of something happening to me,

There is something I would like you all to see.

Its just a photograph of someone that I knew.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?

Do you know what its like on the outside?

Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide,

Mr. Jones.

I keep straining my ears to hear a sound.

Maybe someone is digging underground,

Or have they given up and all gone home to bed,

Thinking those who once existed must be dead.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?

Do you know what its like on the outside?

Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide,

Mr. Jones.

In the event of something happening to me,

There is something I would like you all to see.

Its just a photograph of someone that I knew.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?

Do you know what its like on the outside?

Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide,

Mr. Jones.

CUCUMBER CASTLE

Words by B & R Gibb

This song title undoubtedly inspired Barry and Maurice in naming the TV film and album of the same name,  in 1969, but the song has no other connection with that project and doesn't appear in the Cucumber Castle album.

There where the trees meet the grass,

I think it's inspired.

Said this is the place I will try.

And he did.

Stood in the dark,  said the man

Who beckoned him in.

But leaving his grass was a sin,

But he did.

Cucumber Castle be ever so humble - it's home.

Cucumber Castle be ever so humble - it's home.

He saw the light in the cellar reflect in his eyes,

Yet early that morning was he to receive a surprise.

Cucumber Castle be ever so humble - it's home.

Cucumber Castle be ever so humble - it's home.

Said are you leaving or are you receiving? My friend

Dost need any money to lend

And he did.

He said, "I'm the owner, not you, and this is my stead

So give to me now I'm dead,

And he did. Said:

Cucumber Castle be ever so humble - it's home.

Cucumber Castle be ever so humble - it's home.

TO LOVE SOMEBODY

Words by Barry & Robin Gibb

Robin and Barry originally wrote this song for Otis Redding, after meeting him in New York, but sadly, he and his backing group were killed in an air crash before he had recorded it. However, it later became the Bee Gees' most recorded song by other artists, including Nina Simone and Rod Stewart. Their own recording of it was released as their second British single in 1967. In spite of its popularity with other artists, the single didn't do very well in Britain, but it was a huge hit in the USA.  It is on the album 'Bee Gees First.'

There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you
Lived with you

There's a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain't got you, ain't got?
Baby

You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind
So so so very blind

I'm a man can't you see
What I am
I live and breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got?
Baby

You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

Ahhhhhh no no
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

No no no no no
You don't know what it's like, baby
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

I CAN'T SEE NOBODY

Words by Barry & Robin Gibb

The B side of To Love Somebody. Nina Simone did excellent cover versions of both these songs, as well as Please Read Me, also on this album.

I walk the lonely streets,

I watch the people passing by.

I used to smile and say 'Hello'.

Guess I was just a happy guy,

When you happened, girl;

This feeling now possesses me.

I just can't fool myself.

I guess it all just had to be.

I can' t see nobody,

No, I can't see nobody.

My eyes can only look at you-youhou.

I used to have a brain.

I used to think of many things.

I watched the falling rain

And listen to the sweet birds sing.

Don't ask me why, little girl.

I love you and that's all I can say.

You're every - every breath that I take.

You are my night, my night and day.

I can' t see nobody,

No, I can't see nobody.

My eyes can only look at you-youhou.

Every single word you hear, girl,

Is coming from this heart of mine.

I've never felt like this before,

A love like yours, so young and fine,

And now as I try to forget you,

It doesn't work out anyway.

I loved you such a long time ago...but in my eyes you'll always be.
Every single word you hear...is coming from this heart of mine.
I loved you such a long time ago...don't know why...
And I don't know why...baby...

I can' t see nobody,

No, I can't see nobody.

My eyes can only look at you-youhou.

I can' t see nobody,

No, I can't see nobody.

My eyes can only look at you-youhou.

PLEASE READ ME

Words by Barry & Robin Gibb

Many years ago I was a simple man.

A simple man, no worries, me.

I never lied.

Please read me.

Not much conversation,

I never saw reality, I never tried.

Please read me.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Maybe I've been lying on your couch too long.

I'll stay if you can see me through,

Explain why-y-y-y-y

Please read me,

Please read me,

Please read me,

Please read me.

CLOSE ANOTHER DOOR

Words by Barry and Robin Gibb

The B-side of 'New York Mining Disaster 1941', considering that Barry and Robin were only about 20 and 17 when they wrote it, it shows a remarkable, if not completely accurate, insight into old age. I'm not convinced that I've got the last few lines right on this one. If anybody has any other ideas about it, please let me know.

Many years have passed, its seems

And now I'm all alone.

I've sent the children far away

To some obscure unknown.

It's so sad, so sad.

Close another door.

Listen to my eyes.

Close another door.

You're much too old to work,

So won't you run away?

When I was young I used to say

That age won't bother me.

The life I had was very sad.

It all went out to sea.

It's so sad, so sad.

Close another door.

Listen to my eyes.

Close another door.

You're much too old to work,

So won't you run away?

You know the sun is in outside;

The rain is in my hair.

Now all my life is lived inside;

My home is in my chair.

So sad, so sad.

Close another door.

Listen to my eyes.

Close another door.

You're much too old to work,

So won't you run away?

Let me go;

Send me flowers and put me on the plane.

I've played before, but I've been told,

At least I'm still alive.

Fly me up, fly me up and send me home.

I've been working so, so very hard,

I'm feeling helpless now, I'm tired.

I'm so tired, I'm so tired now,

I've been working, working, working so very hard.

I CLOSE MY EYES

Words by Barry & Robin Gibb

A pleasant song with nice harmonies, not unlike the Beatles, who influenced many of the Bee Gees' songs in their early days.

Look at me, I'm riding high.

Don't know what's wrong with me.

Can't you see I'm not the guy

That I pretend to be?

Though I know I will be lonely,

But our love will never die.

I close my eyes.

Every day I close my eyes.

A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah

The more I try, the more I fail.

I'd like to run away,

But if I try you pass me by,

I know that I can't stay.

Though I know I will be lonely,

But our love will never die.

I close my eyes.

Every day I close my eyes.

A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ah

Though I know I will be lonely,

But our love will never die.

I close my eyes.

Every day I close my eyes.

I close my eyes.

I close my eyes.

I close my eyes.
