19 miles South of Baghdad one finds the remains of Ctesiphon (Al-Mada'in). The city dates from the second century before Chr., but the masonry-arch (the largest single-span brick arch in the world: the walls are 25,5 meters apart and the height of the arch itself is 37 meters) dates from the 3rd century Anno Domini. |
