The artists, Gertrude Moser-Wagner and Beverly Piersol, began, in 1995, to work together on a series of art projects, investigations, installations and events in Austria and abroad. VICE VERSA defines the method used in the areas of perception, interaction and transfer. As guest professor at the Univeristy of Applied Arts from 1990 to 1992, Beverly Piersol initiated an open structure for the master class; Gertrude Moser-Wagner accompanied her in a series of seminars for her class called "Interdisciplinary Projects and Practices". Both freelanced artists are involved in individual art projects, Gertrude Moser-Wagner in conceptual, sculptural and medial context and Beverly Piersol in installation, graphic and spatially related project work.

Project Descriptions

Perception Projects

The perception projects are closely connected to the artists, who function as the ones realizing the results. They investigate, usually on a parallel basis, following a predetermined method, the difference between perceptive filters. The results are highly complex.

ARCHIVAL PROCEDURE 1995

Reciprocal presentation and declaration of artistic procedures

Results:

Booklet # 1: "ARCHIVAL PROCEDURES", with interview by Ursula Baatz, Wien, 1995

TIME SHARING 1996

Travel project Vienna-Ghent

Studio trip by train to Ghent, Belgium for a VICE VERSA exhibit in Experimental Intermedia Huis (Curator Phill Niblock). The work for the exhibition is developed during the train trip using an exact, predefined method.

ORF-Radiokunst Production with Amanda Stewart

Results:

Booklet # 3 "Time Sharing", Material from the Travel Project, Vienna-Ghent, 1996

Exhibition. Video-Edition "Time Sharing", Edition 10, original drawings

Project description:

"Time Sharing", procedure and time structure. 13 hours 30 minutes: 1 hour travel - 1 minute shooting time. The train from Vienna to Ghent. Traveling. 2 artists, 2 video cameras; camera exchange every hour. The production: 2 VICE VERSA video tapes, each 13 min 30 sec, run parallel in the exhibition space. Twin monitors set in two windows face the street; text in the background, on the wall; concepts, partitures, drawings in front, on the windows.

KRAKÒW/KRAKAU 1997-1999

Artistic Research Project

Conscious exposure to the foreign, to unknown places with the same name. Gertrude Moser-Wagner in Kraków, Poland; Beverly Piersol in Krakaudorf, Styria, Austria. Each for one week on the respective site, each exchanging ideas for possible motives per fax. Found and coincidental "Die Leute von St. Benedikt". A television series, filmed in Krakauforf; obvious film locations, sign posts for tourists everywhere: St. Benedikt. A small street, St. Benedikt , in Polish Kraków, one time ghetto. Piersol makes a video from the existing TV series, in which she removes actors, leaving extras and landscape of St. Benedikt (Krakaudorf). Moser-Wagner photographs the Polish site, the remaing row of houses on the street St. Benedikt in Kraków, interviews one of the inhabitants and learns the history of the exiled.

Results:

Booklet # 5 "Kraków/Krakau", documentation of the extensive Krakauprojects 1997/98, with contributions from Burghart Schmidt, Konrad Balder Schäuffelen, Bodo Hell, Jacek Wozniakowski, Héctor Fiore, Wien 1999

VICE VERSA silk screen edition "Leute von St. Benedikt", Edition 10. 10 video stills selected from the Krakau-Video "Cut" (selections from TV series, colored) by Piersol and 10 b/w photos from the St. Benedikt Street in Kraków by Moser-Wagner. Project video "Kraków/Krakau, ein FremdenVerkehr" ("Kraków/Krakau, a Foreign Exchange)

Project description:

"Krakòw/Krakau" is an on-site research project. The city in Poland, the village in Styria (Austria) are used for artistic interventions by the two artists - each foreign to her respective environment. The conceptual impulse is none other than the identical name of two places, which have no relationship to one another - or do they? The research was carried on during a "parallel action" in 1997, Moser-Wagner in Kraków, Poland, Piersol in Krakau, Styria. "Leute von St.Benedikt / People from St. Benedict" was chosen as common denominator. On one hand, as existing fictious TV-series, filmed in and around Krakaudorf, "Die Leute von St. Benedikt" left considerable traces of the medium TV in the head and landscape of the village people; on the other, the real historically loaded little street St.Benedict of the former jewish ghetto in Kraków, Poland, which left major traces in the lives of the polish "People from St. Benedict". The idealic village and the very real city, Austria and Poland and their (common?) history.

Interaction Projects

The interaction projects are related to the word, the concept VICE VERSA and its function.

LITMUS

1996

word, concept

The words VICE VERSA are sent out to writers who work with each other or with the artists, using" vice versa" as method to communicate.

Results:

Booklet # 2 "Litmus", with authors Bodo Hell, Petra Ganglbauer, Amanda Stewart, Jiri Valoch, Wien 1996

BEKANNTGABE (PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT)

1996

function

The concept VICE VERSA goes public; posters with VICE VERSA are mounted for one month on official billboards throughout Vienna. Post cards are made with VICE VERSA and are distributed in public space: the word circulates and communicates.

Results:

Posters and Postcards, Photos of the posters hanging with other posters on the public billboards in Vienna.

Booklet # 4 "Bekanntgabe" (Public Announcement

Transferential Projects

The transferential projects from VICE VERSA function in networks, define a public or refer to groups and establish themselves as catalysers of art. They start as reciprocity and dialog, are processual and end up in public space or internet.

VIA POETI

1999

Poetic Intervention

The Via Poeti in the old city of Bolgna is point of departure for on-site performances, on one hand on the street itself, on the other in a fitness club with the same name. Workshops given by the artists on poetic action, on reciprocity of public and architectual space form part of the project.

Results:

Booklet # 6 "Via Poeti", workshops and trainings, City project, Bologna 1999

WEB VERSENKEN (SINK THE WEB)

2001

Internet-Project

Nature and technology, the Ibmer Moor (Peat Bog) and the computer company IBM. Peat and Internet, 2 non enterable fields - this very fact making them the interesting sources of myths, of stories, and research. Distance and transfer. An illustration: plank bridges are built so that surfaces one cannot enter upon can be entered upon - this to be played through virtually. Some of the inhabitants of Ibm are involved. The results are a web site for and by the particpants on the Ibmer Moor. Sponsor is IBM. "sink the web" is a project for the Upper Austrian Regional Festival (OÖ Festival der Regionen)
