The level that Khan, an 11 year old
abducted girl in Laos,
would be in Kohlbergs Moral development would be in
level 3 and stage 5. Stage 5 is that some laws and elders must be disregarded
if it is a life or death situation. Khan disregarded the laws of her corrupted
oppressors and fought back against her exploiters. She was taken to an
embroidery factory in Thailand
and was forced to work 14 hours a day with no pay just food and clothing. She
was a slave with no chance of legally buying her freedom with no salary to buy
it with. Rather than obeying her oppressors and follow their rules to stay and
work in the factory she decided to try to fight back and break the rules. As a
punishment she was beaten yet this did not stop her and she protested again
this time she was stuffed into a closet where the factory workers poured
industrial chemicals over her and disfigured her. Even with rules and older men
telling her to work in the factory in slavery she resisted them and broke the
rules because she knew that these rules were not true. Luckily Thai authorities
came to her rescue and freed her from her slavery. Now she is receiving an
education and has had plastic surgery to repair her scars. It took a truly
mature and moral young child to be able to stick up to her rulers and fight
against them.
