Whoa I'm starting to wig out. Crystalis and God Slayer are the same game. One day I was veiwing my Famicom/NES game collection and what do you know. I actually liked God Slayer. Come to find out "It's Crystalis". Wow. I'm amazed. Added to all the troubles in the world, I'm still wigging out(hey who am I kidding, yeah right). Anyways I seriously think there might be a storyline change in the game somewhere. I guess that the title "God Slayer" would not have carried much favor among religious critics in most english speaking countries. And so the quest to make money for the game companies continued. Regardless both games are amazingly good and very fun to play.

God Slayer - はるか天空のソナタ or God Slayer - Haruka Tenkuu no Sonata is the full title of the Japanese version of Crystalis. So what does the title mean. Well lets investigate.

はるか(haruka) = far away,distant,remote,far off
天空(tenkuu) = sky,air,ether,firmament
の(no) = particle of possesion
ソナタ(sonata) = sonata

Let's also view each kanji character.
天(ten) = あまつ(amatsu) = heavens,sky,imperial
空(kuu) = から(kara) = empty,sky,void,vacant,vacuum

My initial translation of this title would be God Slayer - Song from the Heavens. I really think I'm correct on this so far. This title sounds somewhat poetic in some sence. Song from the Heavens, doesn't that sound poetic? Well anyways you look at all the words and kanji presented and come to the conclusion of all the words refering to the sky and to the heavens and far away up in the sky. The first part of the japanese part of the title being haruka tenkuu and that being before the particle NO. Sonata is a type of song that is poetic I do believe. So you have song from the heavens. And I will stay with that conclusion. And so why does SNK come up with the name Crystalis. I have no idea to be honest with you, however it does sound cool if you ask me. Maybe I will figure that out after I beat the game. As far as God Slayer is concerned, I may not figure this one out because I dont intend on translating the title completely. Just some of it.

And now moving right along we will attempt some other translations. Perhaps the intro dialog will be appropiate in this case to get a better gist on God Slayers story. Let's start out with the Crystalis intro dialog.

1997, October 1,
The END DAY
Savage war engulfs the world
Civilization is destroyed...
An evolution had taken place.
The earth's axis shifted and
all creatures became mutated.
Life would never be the same..
Those surviving vowed not to
repeat thier mistakes of the
past and erected a great
tower in the sky...
To oppress evil forever...

This here is the intro dialog of Crystalis and a nice story indeed. And now's the time to investigate God Slayer's intro dialog.

1.)1999×ねん 10がつ
THE END DAY
This here dialog seems kind of simple for the most part. With the exception that some words dont translate. I can assume that this is saying that sometime in 199X(pick a year) is the end. 10 is either the date or the month. I'm going to choose month in this case.

2.)ごうまんな じんるいは みずから
ぶんめいを ほうかいさせた。
We may have to break this down some to figure out what it means. I dont see any particles by themselves. However the particles could be included with the words and I have seen this quite a few times.

ごうまんな(gouman-na) = pride, haughtiness, arrogance, insolence. NA could be some type of particle.
じんるいは(jinrui-ha) = mankind, humanity. HA is some type of particle.
みずから(mizukara) = for one's self,personality
ぶんめいを(bunmei-wo) = civilization,culture. WO is the particle.
ほうかいさせた(houkaisaseta) = no translation.

Thankfully most of these words translate. Based on what I can see here is that this is a intro and in almost every RPG that I've ever seen is that the world is facing or has faced some kinda destruction and some kinda change will or has taken place. So given this information I could guess with the current content and looking at the particles. I could come up with a initial translation real fast and I think I will do so.

The pride and arrogance of the human race has increased. This is my initial translation. And now with the third dialog screen.

3.)だいちはいかり じんるいにおおいなる
ばつをあたえた。
ちじくも しぜんも いきものたちも
すべてのものがくるい かわりはてた。

だいちはいかり(daichi-ha-ikari) = daichi: ground, earth, the solid earth / ikari: anger, hatred. HA is the particle.
じんるいにおおいなる(jinrui-ni-ooinaru) = jinrui: mankind,humanity / ooinaru: big,large,great. NI is the particle.
ばつをあたえた(batsu-wo-ataeta) = batsu: strike, attack, punish ataeta: no translation. WO is the particle.
ちじくも(chijiku-mo) = earth's axis.MO is the particle
しぜんも(shizen-mo) = nature. MO is the particle.
いきものたちも(iki-mo-no-tachi-mo) = iki: going tachi: quality,nature.
すべてのものがくるい(subete-nomonoga-kurui) = subete: a-no all,entire,whole / nomonoga: no translation / kurui: deviation,confision,disorder
かわりはてた(kawari-hateta) = kawari: change,alteration,difference

All these dialog words can be rather confusing. However you do have the snapshop with the great fire and all those buildings burning down. And that's a great clue in itself. And so I will do a initial translation.

And then a war so great and terrible,
causes the earths axis to change.
Nature and the earth was changed forever.

I'm going to stay with this translation. I have added a few words of my own to make it sound better to me. Moving right on to the next part of the dialog.

ひとびとは そのあやまちをつぐない
くりかえすことのないように
てんくうたかくに とうをつくった。

Let's break all these down once again to words that we can understand and then deal with the grammar to sort things out.

ひとびとは(hitobito-ha) = each person,people,men,everybody.
そのあやまちをつぐない(sono-ayamachi-wo-tsugunai) = sono: no translation / ayamachi: fault,error,indescretion. tsugunai: recompense,indemnity,atonement.
くりかえすことのないように(kurikaesu-koto-no-naiyou-ni) = kurikaesu: to repeat,to do something over again. / koto: feudal lord, palace. naiyou: internal use, private business.
てんくうたかくに(tenkuu-takaku-ni) = tenkuu: no translation. takaku: many-sided,versatile,polygonal.
とうをつくった(tou-wo-tsukut-ta) = tou: tower,pagoda / tsukut-ta: no translation.

So I will attempt a translation once again. Lets see how it works out. I have a feeling the result is going to be slightly different then the official localization.

Everyone that was left from this war,
decided not to repeat this dreadfull mistake ever again.
And so everyone moved to a tower in the sky.

And now with the last part of the dialog.

ふたたびこころを あくまに
とらわれないように

ふたたびこころを (hutatabi-ko-koro-wo) = hutatabi: again,once more. koro: time,about,toward.
あくまに(akuma-ni) = demon,devil,satan,fiend,evil spirit.
とらわれないように(torawarena-iyou-ni) = torawarena: no translation / iyou: dignity,majestic appearance

I would translate this as follows based on what I've already translated. Mostly staying in context. If this dialog was part of something else I might have a different translation for it.

To stay away from evil forever.

Now that we have all the intro dialog translated. It's time to orginize it all for a rough draft. This will be the first draft before actually editing the script and for final insertion back into the ROM. And so here we go.

October,199X
END DAY.
The pride and arrogance of
the human race has increased.
And then a war so great and terrible,
causes the earths axis to change.
Nature and the earth was changed forever.
Everyone that was left from this war,
decided not to repeat this dreadfull mistake ever again.
And so everyone moved to a tower in the sky.
To stay away from evil forever.

The official localization I would have to say is pretty accurate. And pretty decent from what I've seen in other games. As you can probally see that mine is slightly different. Perhaps this is the way the japanese version is supposed to be. I think so at any rate. I did not see the part about anything living being mutated. However that could have been the result of any nuclear war. The picture of the buildings burning sure looks like some type of nuclear war. So this is the end of this lesson for myself. Once again I have learned something from it. And that's how to handle a entire peice of dialog. And yeah it's certainly not a large script. However I think it does the trick quite well.
